Brooke Jacobs
Class of 2007, Pre-Medicine Major

Brooke JacobsBrooke Jacobs, a 2007 graduate of The University of Findlay, is on her way to realizing her dream of becoming a doctor. A former UF pre-medicine and biology major, Jacobs will attend medical school in the fall at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. But Jacobs doesn’t take all the credit. She says she owes some of her success to the professors and experiences she’s had at UF.

“I have had one-on-one mentoring from several faculty members,” said Jacobs. “Dr. Bartolomeo, my general chemistry professor and academic adviser, always took extra time to meet with me when I was having a problem understanding a concept in chemistry, was always concerned about my progress in the classroom, and has been a great role model and source of support throughout my career at Findlay.”

lab groupJacobs also attributes her preparedness for a career in medicine to anatomy instructor Dr. Joseph P. Conrad, assistant professor in the College of Health Professions, and Dr. Linda M. Peck, professor of biology and director of pre-veterinary studies, both of whom provided her with mock interviews for medical school, proofread her applications and provided opportunities to gain clinical experience.

Although Jacobs believes that academics should be a student’s first priority, she also feels that the years spent in college are an opportunity for each student to grow as a person and experience new things. To become a well-rounded student, “Study hard, don’t procrastinate, but also make time to have a life outside of your academics,” advises Jacobs.

A well-rounded student herself, Jacobs served as president of the Pre-Med club, as a writing tutor and as an intern for the UF Office of Public Information. “These experiences have really helped develop my leadership, organizational and interpersonal communication skills,” said Jacobs.

Having chosen The University of Findlay for its wide variety of choices in health professions and its intimate size, Jacobs received more than she expected and knows she made the right decision by coming to UF. She concluded, “I’ve obtained my goal and I am going to be able to make my dream of becoming a doctor come true.”
