Course Description: 

This course is an introduction to the theory and tools of Macroeconomics.  Learners’ knowledge of concepts and theories will be demonstrated through examinations and problem-solving skills on relevant economic issues.

Though not limited to the following, learners will be introduced to the following concepts:

Production Possibilities Analysis

Demand and Supply Analysis

Market Equilibrium Analysis

Government Intervention in the Market

National Income Accounting

Business Cycle Concepts

Inflation and Unemployment

Keynesian vs. Classical Economics

Monetary Policies

Fiscal Policies



 Course Objectives: 

The main goal of this class is to assist learners in an in-depth understanding of key concepts in the field of macroeconomics. More importantly, learners will critically analyze how these concepts are applied in their personal and/or professional lives.  Learners will also be able to relate these concepts in business and economics issues taking place in the United States and in the global arena.

The instructional strategies used in this class are intended to enhance the student’s knowledge of basic concepts in the field of macroeconomics.   This is a principles course and this course is taught at a freshman/sophomore level.   There are times when some juniors and seniors are in this 200-level course; these students must learn to supplement these instructional strategies with their own readings as applied in their major and/or minor field of studies.   Quantitative analytical skills are utilized in this course as evident in use of graphs, basic charts and table, and derivation of equations where applicable.   Experiential learning is also embedded where applicable.   For example, in discussing the concept of opportunity cost, students must be able to comprehend how it applies in their day-to-day decision making process.  To enhance the experiential learning component of this course, students must be able to relate certain terms and theories to current business and economic events taking place around the world.

Overall, learners in this course are assessed based on their content knowledge through examinations, and assignments. 

Grading:

Exams, Quizzes and Assignments will comprise the following percentages of the semester grade:

Grading Scale/Distribution:

Grades are based on the following percentage of total points earned: 

 100% – 90%  =A
 89% – 80%  =B
 79% – 70%  =C
 69% – 60%  =D
 59% & Below  =F
