School Building Leader (Principal)

School Building Leader (Principal)

Would you like to take on a leadership role at the building level and become a principal?

The Master of Arts in Education program serves as a stepping stone to obtain a School Building Leader (Principal) license. You must first earn a master's degree by successfully completing a required core of 15 semester hours and 18 semester hours of electives selected from the required School Building Leader coursework, for a total of 33 semester hours. The two-year provisional principal license may be earned by completing 12 additional semester hours beyond a master's degree. If you already have earned a master's degree, you only have to take the Required Courses.

The Educational Administration curriculum covers topics such as educational leadership, supervision and professional development, research, instructional leadership, curriculum, school law, administration of special education, technology and assessment, internship, research, and community relations.

You can earn a two-year provisional license for serving as a principal after you have:
  • Completed two years of successful teaching under a professional teaching license;
  • Completed a master's degree;
  • Completed a prescribed educational administration program;
  • Passed the required Praxis II (#10410) test in educational administration;
  • Received the recommendation of the head of teacher education of the institution attended; and
  • Passed a criminal background (BCI) check.
