Approximately 340 occupational therapy practitioners and students gathered for our seventh annual "Evening with a Leader in Occupational  Therapy" on February 18th and 19th. Dr. Roxie Black shared her expertise and fostered self-reflection in two presentations entitled:
  • Is Culturally  Competent Care Achievable?
  • Becoming Culturally  Competent Students: Focus on Self

Dr. Black is a professor and program director of the Master of Occupational Therapy Program at the University of Southern Maine/Lewiston-Auburn College. She is well published and has co-authored Culture & Occupation: A Model of Empowerment in Occupational Therapy, which is being used throughout the UF occupational therapy curriculum.

Dr. Black made a point of interacting with students during her visit to the UF campus. She also graciously autographed text books for students before returning to a busy schedule in Maine.

Dr. Black's research has focused on culture and diversity. Most recently she has been examining the occupational adaptation of Somali women refugees in Maine.
