Sample Courses and Syllabi

Courses in the occupational therapy curriculum provide students with both the foundational and more advanced knowledge and skills necessary for competent practice in the field. Examples of some of the courses and content are given below.

OCTH 321 (Therapeutic Relationships) and OCTH 421 (Advanced Therapeutic Relationships) address the importance of being able to establish a therapeutic relationship with clients in all practice areas. Principles of effective communication with diverse populations are explored and practiced, and students engage in self exploration in order to improve personal skills and learn to be intentional in their approach to others. These courses have a strong experiential component and require students to create a personal growth project as a final assignment.

OCTH 553 (Occupations Through the Lifespan-Adult) is one of four treatment intervention courses, the others focusing on biopsychosocial concerns, pediatrics and geriatrics. In these courses students learn theoretical principles and application. In OCTH 553, assessment tools and interventions appropriate for adults experiencing occupational dysfunction due to a physical condition are introduced and explored in lecture and lab format.

OCTH 622 (Leadership) During the graduate year students learn about leadership characteristics and styles that foster collaboration, promote visionary thinking and enable change. Awareness of the need to utilize mentors, consideration of the effects of the sociopolitical environment, advocacy for consumers and the profession and becoming life-long learners are emphasized.
