The Profession's Outlook

The need for qualified physician assistants continues to grow. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Edition  stated that employment of physician assistants is expected to grow by 39% from 2008 to 2018, much faster than average for all occupations.

The BLS estimates that there were 71,950  employed in the United States earning a mean income of $81,610.[1]

Physician assistant jobs are ranked among the fastest growing occupations due to anticipated expansion of the health care industry and an emphasis on cost containment, resulting in increasing utilization of PAs by physicians and health care institutions.

PAs work in virtually all health care settings, including private practice clinics, hospitals, health maintenance organizations, nursing homes, student health clinics, prison systems, rural health clinics and community centers.

Our Graduate's Experiences

A survey was conducted in September 2010 of all graduates from 2000 to 2009 who could be located. Of the 75 graduates who responded to the survey, 69 (92%) reported being employed in clinical practice.

Approximately 40% were employed in a private office practice, another 37% were employed in an institutional-based practice, and 10% were employed at ambulatory-care clinics.
