Kirat Shahiwala with Dr. Chandra Sekar at the Experimental Biology meeting in New Orleans, April 2009

Kirat Shahiwala is a first year student pursuing a Pharm D. at the College of Pharmacy in the University of Findlay. He has been given the opportunity to spend ten weeks this summer on a research project at the University of Pittsburgh. Kirat’s journey began in the fall of 2008 during the regular registration process for his fall courses.  He told his advisor, Dr. Chandra Sekar, that he was interested in a career in biomedical research in addition to his Pharm. D. program.  He accepted an invitation to join Dr. Sekar on a visit to the University of Pittsburgh for week during winter break in December 2008.  That week was a turning point for Kirat as he realized the exhilaration of discovering “new knowledge.” He presented his work at the Scholarship and Creativity day at UF and was able to attend the “Experimental Biology ‘09” meeting in New Orleans this Spring. His travel to New Orleans was supported by funds from both the college of Pharmacy at UF and the travel funds available for undergraduate research.  Kirat’s commitment to research was further rewarded when he received a $4000 scholarship to pursue research this summer from the University of Pittsburgh.
