Preparing for Medical School

Prior to College Entry

• Explore the medical profession by shadowing a physician or medical student, reading about the profession or volunteering in a health care facility.

• Get to know your faculty advisor.
• Get involved in Pre-Med Club.
• Find out about service activities on campus and get involved.
• Explore volunteer opportunities at hospitals, nursing homes and other health care facilities.
• Seek out academic help as needed and get to know your professors.

• Review information about the MCAT and start preparation.
• Investigate medical schools you may be interested in (medical school catalogs, medical school web sites and Medical School Admission Requirements published by the AAMC are all good sources of information).
• Continue active participation in Pre-Med Club and other activities on campus.
• Meet with your advisor fall and spring semester to ensure that you are on schedule to complete any required courses.

• Contact professors to request that they write letters of recommendation (provide each individual with a resume or other informational form).
• Complete an MCAT preparation course.
• Send in MCAT application and take MCAT.
• Narrow your medical school application choices.
• Fill out medical school application and have it ready to mail by June 1. Be sure to request official transcripts.
• Meet with your advisor fall and spring semester for academic counseling and assistance with your medical school application.

Senior Year

• Complete and return all supplemental applications from medical schools
• Visit schools when invited for interviews.
• Make final decision regarding medical school you plan to attend (by May 15 if accepted to more than one).
• Meet with your advisor to ensure that all of the requirements for your baccalaureate degree are complete.
