Program Goals
The goal of the Masters of TESOL/Bilingual Education Program is to prepare students in the following four areas:
Pedagogic/Practitioner Knowledge
To prepare domestic and international teachers and specialists with sound pedagogic practices that will qualify them for validation in the following programs:
Bilingual Education
Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)
Second Language Acquisition (SLA) Programs
Curricular Knowledge
To prepare curriculum developers, specialists, and program designers working in language-related fields to critically analyze and implement programs designed for language learners and for culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
Linguistic Knowledge
To equip students with current research and knowledge within the fields of sociolinguistics, applied linguistics and second language acquisition; to build an understanding and appreciation for the nature of language and culture and the multitude of variables that influence learning and acquisition; and to build an understanding of the relationships between language, learning and literacy.
Scholastic Advancement
To prepare scholars for advanced degrees in education, sociology, linguistics, anthropology and other related fields; and to prepare candidates for active membership in regional, national and international TESOL/Bilingual organizations.
