Instrumental Music

Scholarships

Renewable scholarships for participation in instrumental ensembles are available. Students may also compete for endowed scholarships, such as the John R. and Marion Van Nice Instrumental Scholarship.

How to Apply

Contact Mr. Taylor for application materials. All candidates must complete an application form and must have a "Music Teacher Reference Form" completed by a band director or a private music teacher. These are to be forwarded to Mr. Taylor when completed.

Auditions

No audition is required for a marching band award. An audition is required, however, for concert band and jazz ensemble awards. Live auditions are preferred (contact Mr. Taylor to arrange your audition time and date). In special cases, taped auditions may be sent. Contact Mr. Taylor for details and more information.

What to Prepare for Auditions

You should have a prepared piece ready to perform - something that demonstrates your background and experience as a musician. Or, you may prepare an audition with excerpts of pieces that you have performed in band or orchestra. You may bring an accompanist but it is not required.

You will be asked to perform a scale to be selected from the following major scales: C, F, G, D, Bb, A, Eb, E, Ab, and chromatic. There will also be a sight reading experience. Students interested in jazz ensemble awards may improvise over Blues in Bb, however, this is not required. If you are proficient on a secondary instrument and would like to perform on that as well, please advise Mr. Taylor in advance of your audition.
