Public Administration: Career Preparation and Options
1) The minor in public administration provides you with the background necessary for success in public sector/nonprofit careers (e.g.public policy, public management, intergovernmental relations, leadership, etc.).
2) The minor in public administration can be attached to many majors in a manageable and effective manner. The coursework, topics, and internship experiences are relevant to a diversity of majors, even if you are not contemplating public service/nonprofit careers. If you are planning for a career in business/industry a knowledge base in business-government relations, regulatory policy, and other public administration areas would prove valuable.
3) The minor in public administration provides a strong experiential component fif you desire internship experiences at the local, state, and/or national level.
4) The public administration program has had great success in placing its students in graduate school programs (Master’s in Public Administration/MPA) with the majority receiving teaching assistantships and scholarships.
5) Instructors in the public administration area utilize a diversity of innovative approaches to classroom teaching, e.g. new technology such as use of the internet and other computer-based learning tools, the case study approach, debate, field trips, and student projects. Because we want you to have a full understanding of this ‘practical’ side of politics, courses are regularly taught by public administration practitioners (e.g. city managers, law enforcement and military personnel, and other professionals from the public/nonprofit sector).
