Forensic Science
Forensic Science is best defined as the application of science to
law. Forensic science is part of science which is applied to
answering legal questions.
The forensic
science is a vital part of the entire criminal justice system
and is involved with many aspects of a criminal
investigation. The goal of forensic science is the evenhanded use
of all available scientific methods and information to determine the
facts in a search for the truth.
The
Forensic Science major was created following the guidelines established
by the United States Department of Justice, Technical Working Group on
Education and Training in Forensic Science (TWGED) and the American
Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS).
Over the past
several years the demand for forensic scientists has increased
significantly. This is due to several factors involving,
population demographics, increased awareness of forensic science by law
enforcement agencies, jury expectations, legal requirements,
accreditation and certification requirements of forensic
laboratories. The increased research activity of
forensic scientific techniques involving DNA, latent prints, trace
evidence, and firearms identification. The impending retirement of a
large number of currently practicing forensic scientists, and increased
awareness of forensic science by the public due to the popularity of
media shows such as CSI.
