Sample Courses and Syllabi
How many other history programs that you have looked at offer the best of traditional and newer approaches to history?
The UF history program has special strengths in the following areas:
1)
Military history. Ever wanted to take a course on World War Two?
The Vietnam War? The History of Warfare? Ever wanted to
hear from American soldiers and veterans about their first-hand
experiences? Findlay is the right school for you!
2) Social
history. Are you interested in the experiences of average people
in the past? Are you interested in learning how people lived and
thought in past times? UF's history program is for you! All
of our courses have a "history of everyday life" component to
them. In fact, we occasionally work with re-enactment groups that
allow you to put your social history knowledge to the test!
3)
Women's history. We offer a plethora of courses devoted to this
important and fascinating field of history. Courses in this area
are closely linked to UF's gender studies program.
4) World
history. Interested in going beyond the American and European
history courses you experienced in high school or another
college? UF is the place for you! All our full-time
historians are trained to teach in at least one or more non-Western
historical subfields. We don't treat our mandatory global history
courses from a "West and the rest" perspective. In fact, we
routinely offer courses on such topics as Latin American and Asian
history!
5) Film and history. Are you aware that most
people get their knowledge of history from audiovisual media such as
the History Channel? Find out how to be an educated consumer and
producer of such fare by taking our acclaimed film and history
course offered at UF! Recent topics for the course have included: World
War Two in Film, Nazi Germany in Film, and the Civil War in Film!
6)
State and local history. We offer (upon request) all our students
free memberships in the Ohio Historical Association! All of our
professors have a special interest and knowledge in state and local
history! You can even do an internship at the Hancock County
History Museum right here in Findlay!
7) UF's history program
stays at the cutting edge of curricular development! Check out
our specialized course offerings on sports history, legal history, and
environmental history! Take ownership of history by becoming a
major in the history area at UF - we regularly ask our students what
elective courses they would like to see us offer. We
listen! Currently in the planning stages based on student
requests: History of Ancient Egypt, History of Organized Crime, History
of Baseball, and History of the American Presidency!
