Sample Courses and Syllabi
We offer courses in three areas: language, culture, and field study. Japan-related courses are offered by other departments (e.g., history, literature, religion, gender studies).
Two sample course syllabi are attached. Please click the JAPN 120/120L and JAPN 350 Course Syllabus links below.
Language Courses:
First-Year Language Courses
JAPN 120: First-Year Japanese I (3 semester hours)
JAPN 120L:
First-Year Japanese I, Tutorial (1 semester hour)
**Students must be enrolled in both courses. However, students
can audit JAPN 120L if they have 18 semester hours already.
**Offered in fall semesters

JAPN 121: First-Year Japanese II (3 semester hours)
JAPN 121L: First-Year Japanese II, Tutorial (1 semester hour)
**Students must be enrolled in both courses. However, students
can audit JAPN 121L if they have 18 semester hours already.

Second-Year Language Courses
JAPN 220: Second-Year Japanese I (3 semester hours)
JAPN 220L: Second
-Year Japanese I, Tutorial (1 semester hour)
**Students must be enrolled in both courses. However, students
can audit JAPN 220L if they have 18 semester hours already.

JAPN 320: Third-Year Japanese I (6 semester hours )
**Usually offered in fall semesters
JAPN 321: Third-Year Japanese II (6 semester hours)

Fourth-Year Language Courses
JAPN 420: Fourth-Year Japanese I (1-4 semester hours)
JAPN 421: Fourth-Year Japanese II (1-4 semester hours)
Culture Courses:
JAPN 350
- Introduction to Japanese culture (
3 credit hours)
**Offered in spring semester
JAPN 350 Course Syllabus
JAPN 495 - Special Topics in Japanese (3 credit hours)
**Topics include Japanese popular culture, gender issues, etc.
Field Study Courses:
JAPN 240 - Experience in Japanese (1-4 semester hours)
**Fields of study include on-campus and Findlay area
(conversation partner project, teaching Japanese language and
culture to elementary school students)
JAPN 499 - Study Abroad/Internship in Japan (1-8 semester hours)
**Fields of study include company internship, summer short exchange
programs, study abroad, etc.).
The type and length of field study will be determined in accordance with
students' needs and future plans.
