Student Success and Satisfaction
The success of the philosophy program is measured by the satisfaction of our students (past and present). Exit surveys show that over the past ten years nearly 100 percent of all graduates in the program “strongly agree” or “agree” that they made a good choice to major (or minor) in philosophy, and that their major (or minor) provided them with an intellectual foundation to become successful in a career after graduation from The University of Findlay.

Celebration of Mission
Philosophy is one of the core liberal arts programs at The University of Findlay. Our identity and reason to be derives from that recognition. Every philosophy course is carefully designed to achieve the following over-arching goals:

  • To further the University’s mission to equip students for meaningful lives and productive careers
  • To further The College of Liberal Art’s mission to prepare students for lives of critical thinking, cultural awareness, and service
  • To further the mission of the University’s general education program to offer students a broad-based foundation of knowledge and skills that will help them become life-long learners as members of a profession as well as members of the global society
  • To further the mission of the philosophy program to help students cultivate self-knowledge, develop critical thinking skills, complement other specializations, and strengthen career preparation

Experienced Teachers
Nearly all philosophy courses are taught by full-time, tenured professors who have their terminal degrees and a wealth of teaching experience. You will encounter friendly faculty who effectively facilitate active learning in the classroom, lively discussions and the ideals of personalized instruction.

Practical Application
The philosophy program is responsive to the realities and practicalities of the 21st century and is forward looking. “Applied” philosophy and “applied” ethics mean bringing philosophical ideas and principles to bear upon practical issues in life in such realms as education, business, law, public policy, health care and the environment.

Links with Other Disciplines
Philosophy courses count toward graduation requirements in eleven other program areas: religious studies, political science, criminal justice, law and the liberal arts, social work, computer science, mathematics, technology management, pre-nursing, physician assistant, and occupational therapy.

Individual Attention and Curriculum Flexibility
Philosophy classes are relatively small, which make personal and meaningful classroom discussion and interaction possible. Because of the flexibility built into the program, you can efficiently double-major to give additional breadth and substance to your degree. To accommodate individualized needs and interests, you have the opportunity to create an individualized program of study in consultation with your academic adviser.

Certificates of Achievement
When you graduate with a major or minor in philosophy you will receive an official certificate you can proudly display as a symbol of your achievement.

Positive Student Course Evaluations
Here are anonymous comments from past course evaluations:

  • There were various teaching methods used, a lot more than in any other class I have participated in.
  • The dialogue teaching style helped me stay alert and pay attention.
  • I really felt I learned the material, unlike in many other classes.
  • The instructor was able to make everyone feel comfortable and feel like their opinion mattered.
  • This course opened my eyes to a lot of new things I never realized before. I now have a better understanding and appreciate how ethics, morality and the many other concepts we’ve learned about are very essential to everyday life and even more so in the world of technology.
  • This class helped me to open up my mind.
  • The most enjoyable course personally I have ever taken.
  • I have learned more from this instructor, in the courses I have taken from him, than any other instructor on this campus.
  • Good application of materials to life experience.
  • The instructor takes an interest in people’s ideas and feelings.
  • A definite learning experience!
