April: Humility and Forgiveness
“Humility makes great men twice honorable.”
-Benjamin Franklin
[Be] Humble
Too often, we see friendships and marriages dissolve over angry words. Resentments divide families and co-workers. Reputations are destroyed by malicious gossip.
In times like this we often think we are hopeless, but the virtuous qualities of both humility and forgiveness can resolve many of these issues. Humility or humbleness is the quality of being courteously respectful of others; it is never being arrogant, contemptuous, or rude. And the good news is that a little humility goes a long way. Humility acts as a bridge that helps us to overcome many of life’s obstacles by allowing us go more than halfway to meet the needs and demands of others.
Like humility, forgiveness also helps us overcome the intense, and sometimes relentless, feelings of bitterness and vengeance we feel when we are on the receiving end of hurtful words or actions. Forgiveness is a release from the burden of anger and pain. When you choose to forgive, you choose to live in the present instead of the past. Forgiveness is a gift to yourself, but it doesn't happen on its own; you must choose to forgive.
Practice humility and forgiveness by:
Being kind to someone that has upset you in the past.
Allowing someone to share a point of view different than yours and not passing judgment.
Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.
Choosing to let go of a grudge you have been holding on to.
Putting a situation in perspective and choosing to move on.
Putting on a smile and reserving all negative comments for one day.
“No really great man ever thought himself so.” -William Hazlitt
“He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love.”
-Martin Luther King
