IHSA Team
Overview: The University of Findlay's English Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) team has become one of the top equestrian teams in the country. They captured the 2001 IHSA National Championship and followed it up with the 2003, 2004 and 2007 Reserve National Championship titles. The coaches, instructors and staff are dedicated and proud of our intense equestrian programs that help develop the most accomplished intercollegiate riders. IHSA is unique in that students do not bring their own horse to the competition. Instead, the host college provides all horses. The riders then participate in a "draw" to determine their mount. Once assigned, the rider will mount their horse, adjust his/her stirrups and enter the show ring. Riders are judged on hunt seat equitation over fences and/or on the flat.
It is not necessary to be an equestrian studies major to participate on the team. Many riders attend the University for a variety of other degrees and compete on the team.
In addition to regional, zone and national championships, we have approximately seven regional qualifying shows per year. We encourage all members and parents to travel with us. We have a wonderful parent and alumni support group. As a member of The University of Findlay's IHSA team, students learn teamwork, time management and how to be a successful rider who produces a winning ride. Although the IHSA requires an ample amount of hard work and commitment, the rewards are great and many.
The varsity team has approximately 30 riders who ride at the top of their determined IHSA level. The junior varsity has approximately 40 riders. These two groups of students work together to share the success of a well-rounded team.
Practices: If you are interested in the IHSA team, it is important that you are a morning person. Some varsity practices are held in the morning at 6:15 a.m., and JV practices are held once every month in the evening . A saddle, girth, saddle pads and bridle will be necessary for practice.
Cost/Expenses: The University of Findlay covers all varsity team travel and showing expenses. The junior varsity has minimal costs, which are covered by the students. Students may rent a tack locker if available for $50 a semester to store their equipment.
Tryouts: Team tryouts will be held during the first couple of weeks in September. You will need your show clothes and an ASTM approved helmet. You will try out on one of The University of Findlay's school horses and will make either our varsity or junior varsity team.
