Our programs are truly diverse and unique. Our equestrian programs in English and western riding are internationally acclaimed. The University of Findlay Western Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Team captured National Championships in 2001, 2005 and 2007, with individual national and regional championships and reserve championships every year this century, and winning point scores far above other competitors. The English IHSA Team won the National Championship in 2001, and achieved reserved national championships in three of the past five years, and many individual championships in national and regional events in four of the last seven years. The success of this program is a credit to the dedicated riding staff and administration who are actively involved in their respective disciplines, and to two large, modern and well equipped facilities for teaching and training.
The Pre-Veterinary degree program has a national reputation featuring hands on experiences with animals from the first day of classes. A new degree program in Animal Science boasts the same experiences.
Environmental, safety and occupational health bachelor and masters degrees offer a wide range of certified training for personal and managerial responses to terrorism, environmental disasters, and day-to-day safety in the workforce, with new directions planned to address issues in sustainability, alternative uses of energy, and company management of hazardous medical wastes.
Computer science programs feature network security issues, solid programming instruction, technology management, and a unique laboratory where multiple hard-drive platforms can be exchanged instantaneously within and between machines.
Mathematics bachelor degrees can be earned for entry into graduate programs, for actuarial management, and for elementary and secondary mathematics. Partnerships with the College of Education are sanctioned by NCATE.
A Bachelor of Science degree in biology is awarded for areas of emphasis in life sciences, ecology, and organismal biology. Modern teaching laboratories for genetics, cell biology and microbiology feature research quality instrumentation. Extensive teaching collections for zoology, anatomy and geology are available. A nature center and a field station provide natural history collections for identification and varied habitats for sampling designs and aquatic and terrestrial studies, respectively.
Chemistry, the newest degree program to be offered, is planning for American Chemical Society (ACS) accreditation with new instrumentation, and course and curriculum revisions that include offering physical and analytical chemistry.
Other support entities in the COS include excellent faculty who teach modern physics, fundamentals of geology and geographic information systems (GIS).
There is a sense of adventure and challenge in the COS, as a transformation moves teaching and research programs toward evermore modern 21st Century goals. The changes are driven by self-assessment and monitored by rigorous peer review. We believe that a strong curriculum builds character, especially when it is coupled with excellent facilities, caring support, excellent teaching, and ample opportunities to challenge your understanding of the breadth and depth of a particular discipline.
