The mission of the Occupational Therapy Program at The University of Findlay is to prepare occupational therapists who understand and value a community-focused and occupation-based approach to practice, are leaders in a variety of professional roles, and participate in ongoing professional development in preparation for service in diverse communities.


 

A major in occupational therapy is available with two options, Traditional and Weekend College (WEC), to complete a Bachelor of Science degree with a pre-occupational therapy emphasis and a Master of Occupational Therapy degree. The five-and-one-half-year Traditional program is completed with pre-professional requirements and three years of professional course work plus fieldwork. The WEC program is completed with pre-professional requirements and three years of professional course work including fieldwork. The WEC program is intended for the adult learner who is a certified occupational therapy assistant, or who has completed an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in a related field and has one year of health-care related experience.


 

A student who has already earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university must complete all of The University of Findlay’s Occupational Therapy Program’s prerequisite courses before beginning the professional portion of the OT Program.


 

For the Traditional program, a major in health science - pre-occupational therapy emphasis cannot be declared unless the incoming freshman has a minimum 3.0 cumulative high school GPA and a minimum composite ACT of 20 (minimum SAT of 1640). The major in health science - pre-occupational therapy emphasis consists of OCTH 306, 311, 312, 321, 330, 340, 345, 350, 404, 410, 415, 421, 424, 450, 463, 474, 480 and HEPR 355. The following prerequisites must also be completed: BIOL 322, 322L, 323, 323L; CHEM 111/111L or higher; ENGL 202, 272, 282, 302, 305, or 306; HEPR 220; MATH 123; PHYS 250, 250L; PSYC 100, 208, and 233.


 

A guaranteed direct freshman admission option will be offered (in addition to the current junior admission) into the OT Traditional Program if an incoming freshman has a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 and a minimum composite ACT of 25 (minimum SAT of 1740).


 

Traditional occupational therapy students will continue on to complete a Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT)degree with OCTH 507, 553, 580, 616, 621, 622, 624, 634, 645, 650, 651, 652, 660, 690, 691, and 695.


 

For the WEC program, the major in health science - pre-occupational therapy emphasis consists of OCTH 222, 306, 312, 315, 330, 340, 345, 350, 404, 410, 415, 421, 463, 474, 481 and HEPR 355. Non-occupational therapy assistants must also complete OCTH 100 and 490. The following prerequisites must also be completed: BIOL 322, 322L, 323, 323L; ENGL 202, 272, 282, 302, 305, or 306; HEPR 220 (non-OTAs only); MATH 123; PHYS 250, 250L or OCTH 221; PSYC 100, 208 (non-OTAs only), 233; three hours in fine arts; three hours in humanities; and three hours in foreign language/culture.


 

WEC occupational therapy students will continue on to complete a Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) degree with OCTH 507, 524, 553, 616, 621, 622, 624, 634, 645, 650, 651, 652, 661, 690, 691, 695.

The goal of the Master of Occupational Therapy program is to provide educational experiences that foster the knowledge, skills and values necessary for entry-level occupational therapy practitioners.
 

Master of Occupational Therapy Program Options

The Master of Occupational Therapy program offers two options, a Traditional and a Weekend College (WEC) program, for students to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in health sciences and a Master of Occupational Therapy degree. The five-and-a-half-year Traditional program is completed with pre-professional requirements and three and one-half years of professional course work. The Weekend College program is completed with pre-professional requirements and three years of professional course work. The Weekend College program is intended for the adult learner who has had one year of full-time work experience. The candidate must be either a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) or a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA). Non-OTA/PTA candidates must have completed a bachelor’s degree and have at least one year of health care-related experience in order to apply.

Professional Program Admission Criteria

For the Traditional Program

1. Completion of the pre-professional course requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree.
2. Minimum overall grade point average of 3.0.
3. Fifty hours of observation or volunteer experience.
4. Three satisfactory professional recommendations.
5. Completed Occupational Therapy program application.
 

For the Weekend Program

OTA:
1. Completion of the pre-professional course requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree.
2. Minimum overall grade point average of 3.0.
3. Three satisfactory professional recommendations.
4. Demonstration of college-level writing ability.
5. Completed Occupational Therapy program application.
 
Non-OTA:
1. Completion of the program prerequisites.
2. Minimum overall grade point average of 3.0.
3. Fifty hours of observation or volunteer experience.
4. Three satisfactory professional recommendations.
5. Demonstration of college-level writing ability.
6. Completed Occupational Therapy program application.
 

Prerequisites

Traditional
Students are admitted into the Master of Occupational Therapy program after completion of the requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree with the pre-professional requirements and OCTH 306, 311, 312, 321, 330, 340, 345, 350, 404, 410, 415, 421, 424, 450, 463, 474, 480 and HEPR 355.
 
Weekend College
Students are admitted into the Master of Occupational Therapy program after completion of the requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree with the pre-professional requirements and OCTH 250, 306, 312, 315, 330, 340, 345, 350, 404, 410, 415, 421, 463, 474, 481 and HEPR 355.
 

Admission Requirements Continued-WEC or Traditional

Students whose native language is not English and who have not graduated from American universities must meet the previously listed admissions conditions, plus:
1. Have a verified TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) minimum total score of 89 with 26 or better in speaking and 24 or better in writing or a verified International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic score with a minimum overall band score of 7.0. Students not supplying an IELTS score are required to test in the Intensive English Language Program, and if necessary, complete coursework in English.
2. Provide an affidavit of financial support (original), if not an American citizen or a permanent resident.
 

Program Minimum Progress Standards

The Occupational Therapy program minimum progress standards are more stringent than the University’s policy regarding graduate minimum progress. Please refer to the Occupational Therapy programs Student Handbook for program policies regarding minimum progress.
 

Degree Requirements

Traditional
Students will complete requirements for the Master of Occupational Therapy degree with OCTH 507, 553, 580, 616, 621, 622, 624, 634, 645, 650, 651, 652, 660, 690, 691 and 695. No more than two courses with a grade of “C+” or “C” can be used to meet graduation requirements.
 
Weekend College
Students will complete requirements for the Master of Occupational Therapy degree with OCTH 507, 524, 553, 616, 621, 622, 624, 634, 645, 650, 651, 652, 661, 690, 691 and 695. No more than two courses with a grade of “C+” or “C” can be used to meet graduation requirements.

Accreditation

The Occupational Therapy program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, P.O. Box 31220, Bethesda, MD 20824-1220. AOTA’s phone number is 301-652-AOTA.

Graduates of the program will be eligible to take the certification examination implemented by the National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) located at 800 South Frederick Avenue, Suite 200, Gaithersburg, MD 20877. The NBCOT is an independent national credentialing agency. It is responsible for all policies related to the certification of occupational therapy personnel. Upon successful completion of this examination, the graduate will be an Occupational Therapist Registered (OTR). Most states use the results of the NBCOT certification examination to determine a practitioner’s eligibility to practice.
