The Mazza Museum is the world's
first and largest collection of children's book illustrations. There
are at least 300 pieces of original artwork on display at any given time
that come from the collection of over 7,000. You can be sure that one
visit to the museum will not be enough since the art is rotated
annually.
There are at least 10,000 visitors to the museum every year.
Well known author and illustrators visit the Mazza for a variety of
events.
The Dudley and Mary Marks Lea
Gallery is an integral aspect of the art program at The University of
Findlay. There are 10 exhibitions throughout the year, including works
by regional and national artists as well as faculty and students.
The
gallery provides an opportunity for students to not only exhibit their
work but also to engage in the organization, preparation, installation,
and evaluation of shows. All exhibitions are free and open to the
public.
Juried Art Exhibition
Annually,
a juried art exhibition is held in order to showcase the best of the
best from works created throughout the year. Prizes are awarded to the
best of show and other noteworthy pieces.
Seniors
are provided with the opportunity to display their finest works in
a senior show in the Lea Gallery, located near the Mazza Museum. Senior
works are not only the feature exhibition but it is also an opportunity
for students to sell pieces if they should choose.
Digital Design and Photography Labs
The University of Findlay has a
Mac lab that contains 25 Macintosh computers with wide-screen monitors
with state of the art software. The lab also contains flatbed scanners
including a large format scanner, a printer that accommodates works that
are 24" wide, and on demand printing. With large screen projectors,
students can easily follow along step by step as the instructor
provides demonstrations.
Although
photography is a minor at UF, the photography studio is fully equipped
and updated for beginning to advanced level students. With 10 stations
available to students, there's no need to schedule a time to work. The
University of Findlay is one of the few institutions that still teaches
dark room techniques.
3-D Art Studios
The University of
Findlay Art Program has two 3-D studio facilities, the ceramics house
and quonset hut. Students have access to these spaces every day of the
week from 8 a.m. to midnight, and ample storage space is available.
- Within the ceramics house, there are areas for wheel throwing and hand building as well as an additional room devoted to advanced ceramic students. There are three electric kilns and one gas kiln. In the fall of 2010, the new salt kiln was completed for student use.
- The quonset hut provides studio space for sculpture students and is equipped for woodworking, welding, and flat glass work.
