Graduate Assistantship Positions

A list of the available graduate assistantship (GA) positions available at UF for the 2013-2014 academic year.   You need to submit an application for EACH position you are applying for. Please only apply for those positions you are qualified for,  included the position number you are applying for on each application.

Position Number:    GA-28
Supervisor: John Stanovich, R.Ph., Assistant Dean of Pharmacy, External Programs  
Description:        (Part-time position)  
GA will assist to develop, assess, and evaluate the Continuing Education Services offered by The University of Findlay College of Pharmacy.  The GA will develop a process to insure that all continuing education activities meet the Accreditation Council on Continuing Pharmacy Education (ACPE) standards.  Coordinating speaker guidance for continuing education activities, performing literature research and evaluation, develop learning objectives tied to needs assessment and gap analysis, coordinate facility and audiovisual needs for live continuing education activities, perform outcome assessment through post-activity survey and follow-up, report continuing education credit through CPE monitor and write a successful grant application to support a continuing education activity.

Supervisor: Crystal Weitz, Campus Compact Center for Service and Learning
Description:        (Full-time position)
This position is needed to help support Campus Compact’s day-to-day activities and special events.  The GA will work with all Campus Compact personnel, including:  Campus Compact Coordinator, Service Learning Faculty Liaison, AmeriCorps VISTA (if granted), members of the Campus Compact Board, and the work-study student.   While the AmeriCorps VISTA will focus on “outreach” to the Findlay community, the GA will focus on “inreach” to the UF campus community.  Both will work together to community service and service-learning projects based on their interactions on campus and off campus.   GA will also maintain a database of volunteer opportunities, and assist with the assessment of volunteer and co-curricular initiatives. 

Position Number: GA-30                   
Supervisor: Christine E. Tulley, Ph.D., Director of the Writing Program, Associate Professor of English
Description:      (Part-time position) 
The GA will assist the Director of Writing with a number of program needs including the following:  Placement of 600 incoming freshman students by test score and transfer credit, pre-requisite checking, and facilitation of schedule changes.  GA will also assist in the collection of data from final portfolio processes in ENGL 104 and 106 and the coordination of ENGL 104 and 145 courses. Specific Qualifications:  master of arts in rhetoric and writing students preferred.    
 
Position Number: GA-31                 
Supervisor: Robert Schirmer, University Archivist & Reference Librarian
Description:        (Part-Time position)
GA activities involve ongoing sorting, evaluation and recording of newly acquired materials.  Assist in the maintenance of the Archives Handbook and finding aids, revising the forms used in the Archives, reviewing the library web pages and creating in them a section for the Archives.  GA will also help to gather and prepare archival materials for use by patrons of the Archives.  Other responsibilities of the position include filing of materials after their use and sorting through multiple copies of items in order to identify the best ones for retention.

Supervisor: Sharon Fleming Walsh, D.Sc., Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Physical Therapy Program
Description:     (Part-time position)
GA will participate in training through the Oiler Success Center and Disability Services regarding the facilitation of small groups, retention of material, and critical thinking/problem solving.  The TA will then be assigned to small groups of students as assigned by the Associate Chair of PT/PT Retention Committee and be required to meet with these groups weekly.  Meet and discuss with content faculty the priority of content to be addressed.   Specific Qualifications:  Successful completion of 1st and 2nd year course material in the PT program.  Good interpersonal skills and awareness of own learning styles and the ability to adapt to those of others.  Willingness to develop their skills in teaching problem solving, critical thinking, small group facilitation, and application of material.   Need to be available to accommodate the course schedule of both weekend and traditional PT students.

Supervisor: Josephine Kershaw, Ph.D. , Associate Professor of Health Care Management
Description:        (Part-Time position)  
Student will conduct literature reviews, create databases and spreadsheets, and analyze research data using Excel and/or SPSS.  In addition, the GA will maintain undergraduate class recordkeeping, such as attendance rolls and assignment spreadsheets.  The GA will help to proctor exams and conduct other teaching support activities as requested.  The GA will assist in preparing materials and correspondence for the Health Care Management (HCM) Advisory Board meetings and also provide support activities as necessary for the HCM Network student organization, including serving as officer and performing leadership activities that will promote the career development of HCM students.  The GA will follow up on the faculty’s initial searches for relevant grant opportunities and develop a listing of upcoming grant deadlines.

Supervisor: Allison Baer, Associate Professor of Education
Description:        (Part-time position)
GA will support the College of Education’s Teacher Resource Center and the UF “Clubhouse” Reading and Math Program.  Duties include research and identify scholarly materials as requested by COE faculty to support student research projects, organize and catalog research materials, reading and review scholarly materials, collect and organize scholarly reviews to be used by COE faculty, staff, and students.  Also to collaborate with the Teacher Resource Center director and professor of record for the UF Reading Program to select appropriate children’s literature for the tutors.  GA will conduct informational tours of the Teacher Resource Center for students, staff, faculty, and guests.  GA may also assist in gathering data to support grant requests.             

Position Number: GA-35               
Supervisor: Bethany Henderson-Dean, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biology, Chair of the Department of Natural Sciences
Description:        (Part-time position)
GA will aid in the management of the Rieck center and to begin marketing this property for use by potential community partners.  Goals of the position will be to increase community awareness of the Rieck Center to potential community partners, establish revenue opportunities for UF, provide experiential learning opportunities for UF students, and maintain and improve the facility.    

Position Number: GA-36                 
Supervisor: Tim Murphy, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Chair of Environmental, Safety and Health Management
Description:        (Part-Time position)
GA will provide direct support in the preparation of a re-accreditation, self-study and campus visit by ABET.  GA will also conduct detailed course mapping and review of learning objectives and outcomes for the ESOH, BSEM, and ENVM programs in preparation for ABET, and HLC/University program assessment requirements.  Other duties include to conduct a review of the ESOH curriculum of three competitive programs, assist in the preparation of departmental grant proposals, and to conduct an inventory and testing of all analytical equipment in the department.

Supervisor: Dr. Nabarun Ghose, Professor of Marketing and Business  
Description:        (Part-time position)   
India Study Abroad: This research assistantship position would run an equal number of weeks as the Summer Semester for the MBA program.  Students will be guided by the faculty member to develop a paper/presentation each or jointly for presentation at the 7th India-USA Global Business Planning and Networking Strategy Conference 2014 in Chennai, India summer 2014 and for presentation and publication in other outlets such as conferences, meetings, proceedings and journals.  Other specific duties such as assisting with logistics before and during India Study Abroad Program summer 2014.  Student will travel and participate in both programs at their own expense.    Specific Qualifications:   First priority will be given to domestic students because this opportunity will provide them with the opportunity to research foreign administration and operations.

Supervisor: Chris Sippel, Coordinator of International Education
Description:          (Part-time position)    
Focus of the GA would pertain to the promotion and support of study abroad opportunities for UF’s domestic students, staff and faculty.  The GA would serve alongside the Coordinator of International Education in taking further steps in the establishment of a true study abroad office and would continue to work to enhance on-campus intercultural activities and learning opportunities through the Buford Intercultural Student Services Center.                       

Position Number: GA-39                  
Supervisor: Melissa A. Cain, Ph.D., Professor, College of Education
Description:          (Part-time position)     
GA will assist the director of the new EdD program to launch the program.  Duties include, but are not limited to:  assisting with contacting interested students, following up with the progress of admissions for students who apply, assisting in the planning of the summer institute, schedule of course offerings, advertising and recruitment efforts, setting up the assessment system in TaskStream, prepare data from the assessment system for analysis by faculty and the Education Advisory council, making sure the EdD Student Handbook is up to date and accessible, and working with the program director to make sure the website is accurate.

Supervisor: David Essinger, Assistant Professor of English
Description:          (Part-time position)     
GA will perform administrative duties including management of submissions for creative writing, maintaining and developing our Open Journal systems platform for online submissions and web publicity, working with social media and other PR, coordinating volunteer staff, and may address editorial, layout and design duties for the annual print issue of Slippery Elm; a new UF literary magazine for a national audience.    

Position Number: GA-41                  
Supervisor: Chris Underation, Assistant Professor of Communication
Description:   (Part-time position)
GA should have some experience with basic finance and accounting and the ability to write well under pressure.  This skill will be used to help with billing, manage accounts, contact advisers.  GA will also manage and schedule staff, technicians, and other personnel, and fill in for board operators for radio and television.  The GA should have good interpersonal skills that include leadership ability to manage internal and external stakeholders.

Supervisor: Kay Koch, Director, Oiler Success Center
Description:        (Full-time position)
GA will serve as a mentor and role model to UF campus community.  Additional duties include accessing, monitoring, inputting and updating databases, monitoring of FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) forms, compile mailings and emails, and assist in office coverage.   Specific Qualifications:  Education or Business major preferred.

Supervisor: Penny Gerdeman, Director, International Admissions and Services  
Description:        (Full-time position)
Job duties include maintaining and residing in the International Welcome Houses.  GA’s also manage overflow housing and transportation at area hotels at the start of each semester.  Enforce all on-campus rules and regulations, and all check-in and check-out forms and billing of Welcome Houses.  Coordinate flight arrivals, housing requests, insurance information, campus tours, transportation, etc. for new and returning students.  Assist with activities sponsored by International Admissions and Services.  GA’s serve as peer mentors for new and returning students.  Students know they can go to the Welcome Houses after hours and on the weekends whenever they need assistance.  
Specific Qualifications: GA’s live on-campus and are here to assist students after hours and on weekends.

Position Number: GA-46         
Supervisor: Almar Walter, Director of Intercultural Student Services
Description:       (Full-time position) 
This position will be used to create more culturally diverse activities and programming for our students at UF.  The position also helps contribute to and, as possible, support all UF initiatives currently existing which promote campus diversity and cultural learning.  Duties include assisting in coordination of yearly activities for students with the director such as Black Student Union events, International Night, Black History Month, Diversity Month programming and all other events sponsored by the office and or The Black Student Union.  Student will also assist with retention and recruitment efforts for students of color, attend administrative meetings with/and in the absence of the director, service as the Co-Advisor of the Black Student Union organization, conduct research and/or published critique to enhance the efficiency and productivity of ISS, direct and manage all facets of ASPIRE mentoring program, perform all clerical duties needed by the department, serve as official transportation liaison for the office needs regarding off campus programming, manage all aspects of Buford Center reservations.  GA is responsible for development of one major diversity program each academic semester.
Specific Qualifications:  Must have the ability to communicate effectively and be sensitive to students from varied cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.  Full knowledge of and commitment to I.S.S. and the University’s policies, procedures, and regulations.  Experience with both underrepresented and international populations, Black Student Union (BSU), Office of Intercultural Student Services (ISS), staff supervision (work study students), and budget administration.   

Position Number: GA-47         
Supervisor: Lori Colchagoff, Director, Office of Disability Services
Description:     (Full-time position) 
GA duties include assisting students registered with the Office of Disabilities Services with daily needs as assigned by the Director.  This could involve providing students information about campus resources, assistance with study and organization skills, and assistance with adaptive equipment set-up, scribe and/or read exams for students.  Assist the Director with the hiring process of student employees, input student disability data into ACCESS software, tutor assigned disability students, represent Disability Services at orientations, registrations and college fairs, attend UF ADA committee meetings, mentor UF suspension return students, Co-lead the ODS support Group.           
Specific Qualifications: Candidate will be expected to have computer skills, above average communication and written skills, experience or interest in working with individuals with disabilities.   

Position Number: GA-48            
Supervisor: Stella Prescott, Riding Instructor and Director of Hunter-Jumper Program, Child Equestrian Complex
Description:      (Full-time position)
GA will be responsible for the following duties:  Plan and organize horse lists, practice lists, organize hotel and travel for the team. Assist IHSA officers with fundraising, collecting tack, and preparing equipment for shows.  Organize contracts for judges, EMT and other IHSA horse show personnel.  GA will need to have travel arrangements to and from to the South Campus, James L Child Facility.
