Teaching AssistantShip Positions

Below are the Teaching Assistantship positions available for the 2013-2014 academic year. You will need to submit an application for EACH position you are applying for.  Please only apply for those positions that you are qualified for.  Make sure that you put the position # number you are applying for on each application.

Position Number: TA-1
Supervisors: Tara Beitzel, Assistant Professor Occupational Therapy, and Laura Schmelzer, Assistant Professor Occupational Therapy  
Description:      (Part-time position) 
TA will be supervised in the Fall semester primarily by Tara Beitzel and will  be responsible for observing, facilitating and grading laboratory assignments in OCTH 312 Analysis of Human Occupation.  In addition to these responsibilities, the TA will assist in grading course assignments and exams for OCTH 312.                                 

TA will be supervised in the Spring semester primarily by Laura Schmelzer to assist with OCTH 474 Research in Occupational Therapy.  TA will be responsible for assisting in grading assignments, practicing interviewing skills, and facilitating qualitative data analysis exercises.  There will be additional opportunities to teach content if the TA is interested in developing the skills associated with this task. Specific Qualification:  Student should be currently in the Occupational Therapy program.   

Position Number: TA-2               
Supervisors: Jennifer Fennema-Bloom, Ed.D., Assistant Professor of TESOL and Bilingual Education, and      Erin Laverick. Ph.D., Director, IELP, Assistant Professor of English as an International Language
Description:        (Part -time position)
TA will tutor beginning-level and at-risk IELP students.  Other duties include observing office hours, providing additional oral practice within and outside classrooms for Communication course students, working at the IELP writing tutor lab with primarily non-native speakers of English, proctor IELP computer-based placement exams and attending IELP faculty meetings. TA will also assist in the Graduate TESOL program as a recitation instructor for linguistics based courses like BLMC 510, 540, 545, and 560.  Student will assist faculty with ESL outreach activities. 
Specific Qualifications:   Full-time student in TESOL graduate program, native or near-native fluency in English, strong writing skills in English, and a strong academic record, professional work ethics.  Some background in teaching either independently or through at least one of our community service learning projects preferred.     

Position Number: TA-3          
Supervisor: Debra Parker, Pharm.D., Associate Professor and Chair of Pharmacy Practice  
Description:         (Part–time position)  
Teaching assistant will facilitate classroom instruction, projects, assignments, and recitations.  TA will also provide supervised feedback to undergraduates, assist with per diem pediatric order set reviews, organize additional MTM opportunities with local employers, facilitate Van Wert Hospital educational opportunities, and any other duties deemed necessary by pharmacy faculty.  
Specific Qualifications:  Must be qualified P5 pharmacy student.

Position Number: TA-4             
Supervisor: Lindsey Buddelmeyer, Instructor of Occupational Therapy  
Description:     (Part-time position)
TA will assist in teaching for OCTH 415 Group Dynamics, OCTH 306 Functional Movement and OCTH 553 Occupations Through Lifespan- Adult by leading groups in classroom, and hands-on assistance in labs.  TA will also assist with research, scholarly work, and presentations involved with the University and the Alzheimer’s Association.  
Specific Qualifications:  Student should be currently in the Occupational Therapy Program.   

Position Number: TA-5           
Supervisor: Tonya A. Dauterman, Pharm.D., Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice, and Katherine Cochran, Pharm.D., Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice  
Description:   (Full-time position)
A will be responsible for facilitating introductory pharmacy practice seminars during the fall and spring semester for PHAR 350, 351, 491, and 492.  Seminar topics include professionalism, assessment and communication.  TA would also assist with classroom material development, teaching, and grading.  TA would use grading rubric to evaluate pharmacy student’s portfolios and provide feedback.  Additional duties include preparation of IRB materials, grant applications, data collection, and abstracts or manuscripts for research projects conducted by the Director and Assistant Director of Experiential Education in the College of Pharmacy.  TA may also be required to collect clinical data at the Wood County Health Department.  
Specific Qualifications:  Qualified pharmacy student in the 5th year curriculum.     

Position Number: TA – 6             
Supervisor: Dr. Cynthia Goodwin, Program Director and Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy, and Dr. Mary Beth Dillon, Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy  
Description:        (Full-time position)  
TA responsibilities in the fall semester will be for observing, facilitating and grading laboratory assignments in OCTH 616, OCTH 311, 315, and 340.  In addition to these responsibilities, the TA will assist in developing and implementing and OT Month Activity that will bring attention to the program and the profession.  This will be done in collaboration with student groups for the implementation.    During the Spring semester TA will be involved and provide support with OCTH 345 (both WEC and traditional), and HEPR 355. TA will be responsible for working with the students as they work on connecting diseases and disorders to the OT process. In addition, the TA will support the instructor in conducting searches regarding the latest policies that impact delivery of services such as healthcare reform, Medicare and Medicaid payment systems.
Specific Qualifications:  Student should be currently in the Occupational Therapy Program.                                  

Position Number: TA – 7
Supervisor: Farabee (F.D.) McCarthy, Ph.D., Director of the Animal Sciences Center, Associate Professor of Equestrian Studies              
Description:     (Full-time position)
TA will be located at the new Dr. C Richard Beckett Animal Science building.  TA will primarily be responsible for coordinating and instructing students in the animal care portion of classes taught to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.  TA may also assist in some lectures held in the Animal Science building.  TA will also be responsible for supervision of the scheduling and coordination of the feeding and care of the hundreds of animals in the program and developing activities that engage the students and improve the learning experience. TA's primary responsibility will be in a teaching hold in both the arena and the barn, assisting in the instruction of the freshman class but with the possibility of involvement in the instruction of sophomore riding students as well.  TA may also assist the barn manager and/or barn foreman with duties in the barn; be utilized as a supervisor of students in the barn as well as support person and liaison between the barn manager and students; work with students who may have problems and issues with their horses in training; or work with the veterinarian and supervise the treatment of horses.

Supervisors: James A. Yaggie, Ph.D., Professor of Physical Therapy, and Lucinda E. (Cindy) Bouillon, PT, Ph.D., Professor, Health Science & Physical Therapy
Description:      (Part-time position) 
TA will assist Instructor of Record in providing supervision and instruction of cadaver dissection for all scheduled lab sessions for each scheduled course.  TA will also provide individual tutorial sessions outside of lab time for enrolled students which would include helping to identify structures in the cadaver and neuro-anatomy labs.  TA will assist Instructor of Record with preparation of materials and care of the cadaveric specimens in the lab.  Other duties may also include assisting with laboratory exam set-up, minor classroom management tasks, and organizing and complete the end-of-term clean-up in the anatomy lab.   TA will also be asked to assist with tutorials provided to area high schools and universities.   Specific Qualifications:  Required to have a strong background in cadaver and neuro-anatomy and have successfully completed the first year in the DPT program. 

Position Number: TA- 9          
Supervisor: Shankar Lanke, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences
Description:      (Part-time position)
TA will assist in performance of various sterile and non-sterile compounding exercises to demonstrate compounding techniques to PHAR 361 and 363 students.  TA will also video record the compounding technique and post the video lectures online.  
Specific Qualifications:  Student must have a prior bachelor's degree in pharmacy or in P5 pharmacy program.  

Position Number: TA- 10          
Supervisor: Sandra Earle, Pharm.D., Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Assessment Coordinator for the Pharm.D. Program
Description:      (Part-time position)
TA will assist in teaching PHAR361 and PHAR362 by providing tutoring to recommended students, assisting in group learning and developing exercises and learning aides for students.  TA will also assist in developing and conduction research in best practices in teaching pharmacokinetics, developing instruments, gathering data and analyzing data for assessment and in pharmacokinetic studies.   Specific Qualifications:   Must be a qualified pharmacy student in the 5th year of the curriculum.   

Position Number: TA-11           
Supervisor: Dr. Cara Davies, Assistant Professor of Health Sciences, PA Program
Description:   (Part-time position)
TA will assist Instructor of Record in providing supervision and instruction of cadaver dissection for all scheduled lab sessions for each scheduled course.  TA will also provide individual tutorial sessions outside of lab time for enrolled students which would include helping to identify structures in the cadaver and neuro-anatomy labs.  TA will assist Instructor of Record with preparation of materials and care of the cadaveric specimens in the lab.  Other duties may also include assisting with laboratory exam set-up, minor classroom management tasks, and organizing and complete the end-of-term clean-up in the anatomy lab.   Specific Qualifications:  Have a strong background in cadaver dissection, as well as neuroanatomical structures. TA needs to be able to “regurgitate” material as well as possess the ability to explain it to other students.  Student should have successfully completed the first year in the appropriate program.

Supervisor: Joseph Martelli, D.I.T. , Associate Professor of Business
Description:   (Part-time position)  
TA will assist in the design and development of two online new Degree Completion classes.  TA will work primarily on the continuous improvement of the courses.

Position Number: TA-49              
Supervisor: Hiro Kawamura, Chair, Department of Language and Culture                    
Description:       (Full-time)
Internationalize K-12 Education in Hancock County is a grant funded position with the goal to raise the quality to living among Hancock County youth by providing them with experiential cultural learning opportunities.  The project aims to accomplish this goal through interactive hands-on activities and presentations in K-12 classrooms by American students who have studied abroad and international students.  Class visits will be organized for multiple K-12 grade levels, and presentations on many different cultures will be conducted. TA will also assist the Director of Language and Culture with development of an undergraduate course that will sustain the activities upon the completion of the project.
