OPT Information and Forms Download
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary employment that is directly related to an F-1 student’s major area of study available when a student completes their program. OPT employment authorization is granted for 12 months with a 17 month extension available for students enrolled in S.T.E.M (Science, Technical, Engineering, Mathematics) programs. How to Apply for OPTStudents can begin the application process up to 90 days before their program completion date. Download the OPT Application Packet and follow the instructions to apply for OPT. Students in STEM programs can apply for a 17 month extension any time during their 12 month of OPT employment authorization. The extension must be filed before the Employment End Date printed on the EAD card. Download the Extension Packet to apply. 17 Month Extension Packet DownloadI-765 Form for Extension DownloadReporting RequirementsStudents are required to report to the DSO of the university to maintain their F1 status while on OPT. Failure to report the required information may result in the students status being terminated. The required information a student must report is: 1) a change of address within 10 days of the change, 2) employer name and address within 10 days of hire 3) termination of employment with 48 hours, 4) students in an extension period must report every six months with the DSO.
