The purpose of the Mathematics Placement Test is to determine if your
first mathematics class at The University of Findlay should be
pre-calculus or calculus. You should only take the test if you
are comfortable with the topics of trigonometry, logarithms and
exponential functions and you wish to register for calculus your first
semester.
Who takes this TEST?
All incoming students are to take this test. This test is optional only for theses students with precalculus or calculus college transfer credit.
WHEN IS THE TEST TAKEN?
The Mathematics Placement Test is given on campus the morning of your
New Student Registration. You may bring a calculator (either a
scientific or graphing calculator, but not one with an algebra system
such as TI-89 or TI-92) to use during the test.

Q: What is the best way to prepare for this test?

Q: Why should I prepare for this test?
A: The results of this test determine
how many mathematics classes you will have to take at UF to earn your
degree. You want to make sure you are placed into the appropriate class
so that you can be successful and not take unnecessary classes.
Q: When is the placement test given?
A: The placement test is given during
student orientation in the morning. In the afternoon your adviser will
have your placement results.
Q: What do I need to bring to take the placement test?
A: You will want to bring your calculator with you as well as something to write with.
Q: What if I have completed precalculus or calculus at my high school? Do I still need to take the placement test?
A: Yes, you still need to take the
placement test. Since it may have been a year or two since you had some
of this content, please take the time to look at the review material
listed above.
Q: What if I have college credit for a math class already?
A: If you have college credit for
precalculus, college algebra or calculus make sure to tell your
adviser. You will want to request that an official transcript be sent to
UF from the college where you received the credit. The college credit
you received will determine your placement. Please note that college
credit for statistics does not determine your placement and you will
have to complete the placement test. On the morning of the placement
test, ask the test proctor what you need to do.
Q: What if I have taken the AP test in mathematics?
A: Unless you have received your AP
scores and know that you have college credit for calculus, you should
take the placement test. Once your AP scores are reported to UF, your
schedule can be adjusted as needed. Please check with your advisor
about any possible schedule changes.
Q: What if I feel my math placement is incorrect?
A: There will be an opportunity to
re-take the placement test on either the Sunday evening of orientation
weekend or on Monday evening the first day of classes. To be eligible
for this re-take you (the student) must contact Judy McCrory (
jmccrory@findlay.edu). You may be asked to provide documentation to support your request.
Q: How long is my placement score good?
A: The placement score on the test is
good for two years. If a student wishes to enroll in a mathematics
course that has a prerequisite of “approved score on placement exam”
after the two years, the placement test will have to be repeated.
