Health Informatics Curriculum


Admission Requirements for the Certificate in Health Informatics
In order to be admitted to the program, the student must meet the following admission standards:  

  • Meet the Initial Admission Requirement #1 as described in the Graduate Catalog.
  • To show evidence of the ability to function successfully across a breadth of course work, the student must achieve a minimum 3.0/4.0 grade point average in the last 64 semester hours of his/her baccalaureate degree or first-professional degree as indicated on the submitted transcript. This includes classes from all institutions attended.
  • To show evidence of communication and language skills necessary for successful completion of a graduate degree the student must:
    • Achieve acceptable performance on a program-specific, structured writing project, the results and product to be retained in the student's master file. The writing project will consist of a standardized list of questions which all student candidates must answer as completely, grammatically correct and as professionally as possible.
    • Students whose native language is not English and who have not graduated from American universities must meet the previously listed admissions conditions, plus score at least 550 on a verified Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) paper-based test (PBT); a verified TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) minimum total score of 79-80 with 20 or better in speaking and 20 or better in writing; at least 213 on a verified TOEFL computer-based test (CBT) or a verified International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic score with a minimum overall band score of 7.0.
  • Hold credit in the following courses or their equivalents. These courses must be completed with a "C" or above with a minimum combined GPA of at least a 3.0.
    • HEPR 220, Medical Terminology
    • BIOL 201/201L, Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology with a lab
    • CSCI 190, Computer Science I
    • CSCI 285, SQL Programming
    • Recommended but not required: CSCI 157, Database Application; CSCI 45 Computer Networking or CSCI 490, Database Management Systems
  • Submit a resume outlining prior work experience.
  • Submit three letters of reference, one from a faculty member, one from a supervisor who has observed the student candidate's work and one of the student candidate's choice.
  • Register following the registration policy as described in the Graduate Catalog.

A certificate in health informatics consists of HINF 501, 523, 541, 553, 620 and 690.

Admission Requirements for the Master of Science in Health Informatics
To be admitted to the Master of Science in Health Informatics program, the student must meet the following admission requirements in addition to the requirements outlined earlier within the Procedures for Application to Graduate Programs and Initial Admission Requirements: 

  • To show evidence of the ability to function successfully in a graduate program of academic study in health informatics, the student must provide an official transcript indicating the student has completed a baccalaureate degree or a first-professional degree from a regionally-accredited body recognized by the United States Department of Education, prior to beginning course work.
  • Must hold credit in the following prerequisite courses (a-d, below).  Prerequisite courses must be completed with a final grade of C or above (required), a 3.0 combined GPA (preferred). Course numbers listed below are specific to the University of Findlay and are provided as examples.  Prerequisite courses may be completed at other colleges or universities.
    • Required prerequisite courses:
      • HEPR 220 - Medical Terminology 3 cr. hrs.
      • BIOL 201/201L - Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology and Lab) 4 cr. hrs.
      • CSCI 190 - Computer Science I  3 cr. hrs.
      • CSCI 285 - SQL Programming 3 cr. hrs

Incoming students are best-prepared if they have completed certain other course work, as follows: 

    •  Recommended but not required:
      • CSCI 157 - Database Applications  3 cr. hrs.
      • CSCI 445 - Computer Networking 3 cr. hrs.
      • CSCI 490 - Database Management Systems  3 cr. hrs.
      • Pathophysiology
      • Pharmacology
  • To show evidence of communication and language skills necessary for successful completion of a graduate degree the student must achieve acceptable performance on a program-specific, structured writing project, the results and product to be retained in the student’s master file.  The writing project will consist of a list of essay questions which all student candidates must answer.
  • Submit a résumé outlining prior work experience.  

The Master of Science in Health Informatics degree consists of HINF 501, 523, 541, 553, 570, 620, 622, 632, 660, 673, 690 and 691. No more than one “C+” or “C” may be used to meet graduation degree requirements.
