Excellence in Scholarship and Research
Friday, November 11, 2005

From marketing trends in NASCAR to the mating habits of a nocturnal damselfly, Academic Excellence Day gave the campus community a chance to learn about a wide range of exciting topics.

More than 300 people viewed 43 presentations and displays put together by UF students, faculty and staff during the fifth annual Academic Excellence Day on Nov. 9. The half-day long event is a showcase of the dedication to excellence through research and scholarship in which UF students, faculty and staff members have participated.

The event began with a welcome from Dr. DeBow Freed, UF president, followed by a keynote address by Dr. Annie McKee, the author of the best-selling book, "Primal Leadership: Learning to Lead with Emotional Intelligence."

During her talk, titled “The Passion Within,” McKee encouraged the campus community to be aware of their role as a leader in all aspects of their life. “Leadership is a human issue, not a business issue,” she said.  “Great leaders are whole people. They are in tune with their mind, body and spirit. They inspire others through hope, vision and caring.”
        McKee met with College of Business students after her keynote address.

Academic Excellence Day also included a summary performance of the University theatre program’s rendition of the play, “The Illusion.”

The presentations covered a diverse range of areas including business, healthcare, technology, social science and science. The presentations included:
  • Improving patient safety through technology;
  • How the values of the Japan, Australia and the United States cultures are similar and different;
  • Economic development in China;
  • Readings of original works of poetry and fiction;
  • The impact of Mad Cow Disease; and
  • Photography from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
