Parents, Families Experience Life at UF
Monday, September 25, 2006
The University of Findlay welcomed close to 400 parents and family
members to campus and to the community for Family Weekend Sept. 22-23.
| Alisha Wirt, freshman physical therapy major, attended class with her mom, Angie.
| | Christina Hesse, freshman equestrian major, enjoyed dinner with her dad, Jack, in Henderson Dining Hall.
| On Friday, Sept. 22, more than 100 parents and
family members hit the books and attended classes with their UF
students. They were able to meet students’ professors and experience
first-hand what it’s like to attend classes at the University.
An afternoon driving tour through the city of Findlay took visitors to
the English and western equestrian farms, the Environmental Resource
Training Center and the Russ and Peg Armstrong Sports Complex. The last
stop on the tour was the Alumni Memorial Union (AMU) for a taste of Dietsch Brothers’ ice cream, a town favorite.
After dinner in Henderson Dining Hall on Friday,
visitors had the option to attend the first Concert and Lecture Series
performance featuring the Toledo Opera in Winebrenner Theological
Seminary (WTS). Under the direction of Renay Conlin, the group
performed selections from “Romeo and Juliet,” “Don Pasquale” and
“Tosca.”
A continental breakfast was served to more than 300
parents and family members on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 10
a.m. in the AMU followed by a panel discussion in WTS: “A Day in the
Life of a UF Student.” Panelists included Anne Albert, co-director and
assistant professor of mathematics; Don Collins, student-athlete
academic counselor; Jeff Frye, director of chemistry and natural
science and assistant professor of chemistry; Gary Johnson, Ph.D.,
associate professor of English; Kay Koch, director of the Student
Office of Advocacy and Retention; and Diana Musgrave, student mentor
for the First-Year Experience program.

|
From 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., approximately 400
visitors attended a family picnic and equestrian festival at the James
L. Child Jr. Equestrian Complex on County Road 210, Findlay. Equestrian
students and their horses performed hunter, jumper and dressage
demonstrations. For children, a clown, face painting and pony rides
were available.
While on campus, visitors also had the opportunity
to attend the Cruise
Cuisine and Travel Show Sept. 23 and Sept. 24 in
the Koehler Fitness and Recreation Center. Five major cruise lines were
in attendance, and The University of Findlay’s hospitality management
program was the only food provider for the show. There were
demonstrations throughout the day and entertainment by Findlay High
School’s steel drum band Pantasia. The show was sponsored by WFIN, WKXA
and Carlson Millstream Travel.
Family Weekend concluded with the UF versus Wayne State football game
at Donnell Stadium. The first 1,000 people who arrived at the game
received a complimentary pulled pork sandwich, coleslaw and baked beans
from the Red Pig Inn.
