Nearly 300 students will graduate from the University during fall commencement ceremonies at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, in the Koehler Complex on campus.

One doctor of pharmacy degree will be awarded. More than 115 graduate degrees will be awarded, and more than 115 undergraduate degrees will be awarded, including approximately 25 bachelor of arts degrees and approximately 90 bachelor of science degrees.            

Nearly 15 associate of arts degrees will be conferred.            

Approximately 60 students who already have completed requirements for graduation will walk in the ceremony.            

A.R. Charnes

A.R. Charnes, a 1966 graduate of then-Findlay College, will give the commencement address.       

Charnes, a University trustee since 2008, earned a degree in marketing and went on to have a successful career in the oil industry. In retirement, he has committed his time and resources to making The University of Findlay a better place for students who are attending now.            

After graduation, he began his career with Marathon Oil Co., where he was a manager in a variety of assignments for 22 years, and he retired in 2008 as vice president of marketing for Getty Petroleum Marketing Inc., a subsidiary of Lukoil Co.  

In 1985, Mr. Charnes was inducted into The University of Findlay Athletic Hall of Fame for his achievements as a member of the men’s varsity basketball team and the men’s golf team, and in 2008, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus for his career accomplishments and his involvement with his alma mater.  

He and his wife, Mary Ann, became the national co-chairs for The University of Findlay’s 125th Endowed Funds Drive, which was launched in 2008 with a goal of establishing 125 endowed funds in honor of the institution’s 125th anniversary. Today, more than 100 endowments amounting to nearly $8 million have been created.            

The University’s traditional Arch Ceremony will immediately follow commencement at approximately 4 p.m. at the Griffith Memorial Arch.            

The Arch is named for Caddie A. Griffith, Class of 1909. She headed the Findlay College department of English in 1914-16 and 1917-18, before going on to serve as dean of women at Franklin College, Indiana, and Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio. She died in 1923.
