Approximately 720 degrees will be awarded by The University of Findlay during spring commencement ceremonies at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, in the Koehler Complex on campus.

John Malacos, Ph.D., will give the commencement address, and Margaret M. Palmer will be presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in honor of her outstanding service to the University and the community.  

Fifty students will be the first class to receive doctor of physical therapy degrees from the University. Fifty-seven doctor of pharmacy degrees will be awarded. More than 170 master’s degrees will be awarded, and more than 410 bachelor’s degrees will be awarded, including approximately 60 bachelor of arts degrees and approximately 350 bachelor of science degrees. More than 30 associate of arts degrees will be conferred.            

John Malacos, Ph.D.

John Malacos, Ph.D., professor of psychology and chair of the department of psychology, spearheaded the Power of Positive project, a yearlong celebration of human goodness. He has presented on the field of psychology at international, national and regional meetings and conferences.

Malacos holds a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University and both a master’s degree and doctoral degree from Michigan State University.  

Margaret Palmer has a passion for education, which is evident as she connects with and befriends the students who receive funds from the Margaret and Paul Palmer Family Scholarship. In addition to being involved with the University, Palmer has been active in St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, Thursday Conversation Club and the Shakespeare Club, among others, and she helped start the libraries at Jefferson Elementary School and St. Andrew’s.  

Margaret Palmer

Palmer was recognized by the University as a Distinguished Associate in 2005, and she was inducted into the Curtain Raisers Society Wall of Fame in 2009. Palmer holds a degree in chemistry from the University of Michigan. She resides in Findlay and has three grown children.            

The University’s traditional Arch Ceremony will immediately follow commencement at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the Griffith Memorial Arch.

The Arch is named for Caddie A. Griffith, Class of 1909. She headed the Findlay College department of English in 1914-16 and 1917-18, before going on to serve as dean of women at Franklin College, Indiana, and Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio. She died in 1923.
