Mazza Event Scheduled at UF

Findlay, Ohio, Sept. 5, 2000 – The University of Findlay’s Mazza Collection will host a presentation by artist Donald Crews on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. in the Virginia B. Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion.

Crews began his career as art director for Dance Magazine in New York City. His artistic training consisted of attending Arts High School in Newark, N.J., and the Cooper Union in New York.

His first book, We Read: A to Z, was designed in 1963 as a portfolio builder and was published in 1967. His second book, Ten Black Dots, was done in 1964.

Crews is the recipient of many awards. We Read: A to Z was included in the American Institute of Graphic Arts 50 Books of the Year in 1968, Eclipse was named by the Children’s Book Council for Children’s Book Showcase in 1974, Rain was an American Institute of Graphic Arts Book Show selection in 1979, Freight Train was both a Caldecott Honor Book and an American Library Association Notable Book in 1979, Truck was a Caldecott Honor Book and Junior Literacy Guild selection in 1981 and Flying was listed by The New York Times as one of the 10 best illustrated books in 1986.

Watercolors from Freight Train and Flying are located in the Mazza Collection.
