UF Announces New Endowed Scholarships

Findlay, Ohio, Dec. 15, 2000 — Nineteen endowed scholarships have been established at The University of Findlay for the 2000-2001 academic year.

The new scholarships include the Russel and Peg Armstrong Business Scholarship, Frederick Kremer Jr. Scholarship, Solomon Software Entrepreneurial Excellence Scholarship, Walter L. Whithaus Scholarship, John and Patricia Luther Endowed Fund, Janet Maule Swartz Scholarship, Dr. Jean C. Nye Memorial Scholarship, Marie G. Sweitzer Scholarship, Environmental, Safety and Health Operating Scholarship, Stevenson-Phillips Operating Scholarship, Gary L. Cramer II Endowed Scholarship, Dr. Jean C. Nye Music Scholarship, Caleb T. Clark Scholarship, Dice A. Hartman Book Scholarship, Royal and Rosamond Kear Scholarship, George R. Lanagan Sr. Scholarship, Patricia A. March Scholarship, Florence F. Overmire Scholarship and Stober Endowed Book Fund.

A minimum investment of $10,000 is required in order to endow a scholarship at The University of Findlay. There are currently 169 fully endowed scholarships at UF, providing nearly $200,000 worth of financial assistance to students each year.

The Russel and Peg Armstrong Business Scholarship was established by Marguerite “Peg” Armstrong to honor her late husband’s achievements and success in their own business. It is designed to assist students who are majoring in business and who have a 3.0 grade point average.

Established by his friends and family, the Frederick Kremer Jr. Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student majoring in business and carrying a 3.0 or better grade point average. The late Fred Kremer was a member of the UF Board of Trustees from 1993-98 and was instrumental in establishing the endowment policy at the University.

Honoring their 20th year in business, the founders and associates of Solomon Software established the Solomon Software Entrepreneurial Excellence Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student who shows entrepreneurial excellence in business by starting, helping or assisting in the development of a business to help others become more productive.

The Walter L. Whithaus Scholarship was established in his memory by his family and friends. Whithaus was a long-time Findlay businessman. The scholarship is awarded to a student from Hancock County majoring in business and carrying a 3.0 grade point average.

Established by John and Patricia Luther, the John and Patricia Luther Endowed Fund is used to fund the general operation of the Marilyn and Gordon Macklin Institute for Intergenerational Studies at The University of Findlay.

Stanley L. Swartz ’70 established the Janet Maule Swartz Scholarship in honor of his wife, Janet Maule Swartz ’70, for her dedication to educating young people. The scholarship is awarded annually to UF students majoring in elementary education. Recipients must demonstrate financial need and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher. The Swartzes are both educators in the areas of elementary and special education

The UF Board of Trustees established the Dr. Jean C. Nye Memorial Scholarship. Nye came to Findlay in 1959, and, during her tenure, she taught Spanish, developed the undergraduate program in bilingual multicultural education and created the master of arts in teaching English to speakers of other languages and bilingual education programs. She was named assistant vice president of institutional advancement in 1997 and served as UF’s government liaison at the state and federal levels. She successfully pursued and received government, foundation and corporation grants totaling more than $10 million. At the time of her death in early 2000, she was actively engaged in obtaining funding for the intergenerational studies program, among others. This scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in UF’s intergenerational studies program.

The Marie G. Sweitzer Scholarship was established by Beth Sweitzer-Riley, assistant vice president of enrollment services, in memory of her mother and to honor her dedication to the teaching profession. Through her determination, Sweitzer returned to college as one of the first non-traditional students in her era to earn her bachelor’s degree. Preference for this scholarship is given to a non-traditional student intending to enter the teaching profession.

Through the generosity of anonymous donors, the Environmental, Safety and Health Operating Scholarship was established to assist students who are environmental, safety and health management majors. The recipients must be in their junior or senior years and have 3.0 grade point averages.

Dr. and Mrs. Jerry L. Stevenson established the Stevenson-Phillips Operating Scholarship in recognition of Doc Phillips and out of their mutual interest in the field of biology and the potential to recruit and retain outstanding scholars in this program by providing financial assistance to students. Recipients must have a 3.0 grade point average.

The family and friends of Gary L. Cramer II have established, in his memory and in recognition of his achievement and dedication to The University of Findlay, the Gary L. Cramer II Endowed Scholarship. Cramer was a political science faculty member who inspired enthusiasm for taking the next step on what could sometimes be a rocky pathway to success. This scholarship assists full-time students majoring in political science and carrying a 3.0 grade point average.

The Dr. Jean C. Nye Music Scholarship was established through the generosity of family and friends. Nye was a professor and administrator at Findlay from 1959-00. Her love of music was evident in many ways. She played the organ at her church and sang in the choir. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time student participating in the vocal and/or instrumental music program at UF and carrying a 3.0 or better grade point average.

Friends and family of Caleb T. Clark ’98 established the Caleb T. Clark Scholarship in his memory. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology, hazardous materials management and fine arts. This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in art and/or environmental studies and maintaining a 3.0 grade point average.

Margaret Hartman and family established the Dice A. Hartman Book Scholarship at UF in recognition of Mr. Hartman’s interest in UF and in providing financial assistance to outstanding students. This award is used to purchase academic books and supplies needed for coursework. The recipient must be a full-time student and demonstrate financial need.

The Royal and Rosamond Kear Scholarship was set up by the couple’s family and friends to assist students in meeting the financial obligation of attending college. The recipients must be enrolled in an approved major recognized by UF and must count towarda degree at UF. This scholarship is renewable if the recipient maintains a 3.0 grade point average.

Through her bequest, Elizabeth L. Lanagan established the George R. Lanagan Sr. Scholarship honoring her late husband. This scholarship is awarded to students participating in a musical program at UF, in even years, and to students participating in intercollegiate athletics, in odd years. A 3.0 grade point average must be maintained by recipients.

Established by family and friends of Patricia A. March, the Patricia A. March Scholarship is awarded to students who are members of the residence life staff with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Through her bequest, the Florence F. Overmire Scholarship was established. This scholarship helps students achieve their goals of obtaining a college degree. Recipients may be in their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year and must maintain a 3.0 grade point average.

Dortha Stober established the Stober Endowed Book Fund at UF to provide financial assistance to students to purchase academic books needed for coursework. This scholarship is to be awarded annually, and the recipient must be a full-time student demonstrating financial need.
