Findlay, Ohio, April 3, 2001 — The University of Findlay has been awarded an Americorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) volunteer position for the 2001-2002 academic year.
The University’s Campus Compact Community Service Program is seeking a graduating senior, recent graduate or community member to fill this position, which will work on volunteer and service learning initiatives on campus.
This 12-month service opportunity is sponsored by the Corporation for National Service and is in coordination with the Ohio Campus Compact. Americorps VISTA is a national service program in which volunteers live in the communities they serve and design programs that will continue after they complete their service. Since 1965, Americorps VISTA has been meeting the needs of under-served communities across the nation. The University of Findlay’s Campus Compact Program coordinates student volunteer opportunities and placements on campus and in the community and aids in faculty service learning initiatives.
Benefits of the position include a $717 per month living stipend, room and board at The University of Findlay, student loan deferment, a $4,725 post-service educational award to pay for loans, graduate school or other educational expenses, and ongoing on the job training.
The AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer will begin his or her year of service in July with a week of intensive training in facilitative leadership, student development, service learning and campus-based community service issues. This training enables the individual to develop and to provide assistance to students, staff and faculty in the areas of service-learning, community partnerships, campus collaboration and student leadership in service. Training will continue throughout the year, and the VISTA will work with UF’s Campus Compact director to serve as a liaison between the University’s first year seminar faculty and students and the Compact Office, develop databases to track community service and service learning placements, design evaluation and monitoring tools for service learning and community service, recruit and train students for community service and volunteer projects, work with faculty to implement service learning courses across the disciplines, provide leadership training for students and student groups and reflective exercises for service, and forge partnerships and volunteer placements with community-based organizations.
UF was one of only 10 Ohio colleges awarded the VISTA position.
