UF and Glenwood Students Partner for Peace
Friday, April 06, 2001

Findlay, Ohio, April 6, 2001 — Eighth grade honors students at Glenwood Middle School have teamed with communication students at The University of Findlay in the name of peace.

After a semester of service-learning centered around topics of diversity, students will unveil "Anne Frank’s Peace Exhibit" at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, Holocaust Remembrance Day, in the University’s Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion. Brief remarks and student readings will kick off the reception, which is free and open to the public.

Prior to the public reception, students will conduct a topic-related symposium at 4:45 p.m., and Phil Masters, Holocaust survivor, will talk about his childhood experience of the Holocaust at 5:30 p.m. with parents, faculty and students in the Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion, Pfeiffer Lecture Hall.

Running through April 22 in honor of Holocaust Remembrance Week, the art exhibit includes photography, student poetry, journal entries and visual arts along with a re-creation of Anne Frank’s "bedroom," where the 12-year-old hid from the Nazis for two years during World War II.

"Peace" is one of 33 Communicating Common Ground projects nationwide that partners university and K-12 students to combat hate, promote tolerance and investigate civic responsibility. Peace partner teachers are Beth Ann Nissen, honors educator at Glenwood Middle School, and Jeanette Drake, assistant professor of communication at The University of Findlay. The project is sponsored by the National Communication Association, American Association of Higher Education, Southern Poverty Law Center and Campus Compact, the national group for service learning.
