UF Announces New Endowed Scholarships

Findlay, Ohio, Jan. 23, 2002 — Twelve endowed scholarships have been established at The University of Findlay for the 2001-2002 academic year.

The new scholarships include the Hazel and Bert Miller Business Scholarship Endowment Fund, Richard E. and Jean K. Davis Scholarship Endowment Fund, John R. and Barbara F. Murray Award, Ida Fern Wayne ’29 and Albert Castile Religious Studies Endowment Fund, Marvin "Monty" Monroe ’42 Scholarship Endowment Fund, Dr. Jean C. Nye Spanish Scholarship Endowment Fund, Samuel F. Reist Scholarship Endowment Fund, Marjorie L. White Piano Scholarship Endowment Fund, Nancy Borsani Operating Book Scholarship, O.J. and Georgia Huffman Scholarship, Howard and Carolyn Marvin Scholarship and Clauss Varsity Ice Hockey Scholarship Endowment Fund.

A minimum investment of $10,000 is required in order to endow a scholarship at The University of Findlay. There are currently 169 fully endowed scholarships at UF, providing nearly $200,000 worth of financial assistance to students each year.

The Hazel and Bert Miller Business Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Hazel Miller to assist students who major in business and maintain a 3.0 grade point average.

Established by family and friends and alumni of UF’s physician assistant program, the Richard E. and Jean K. Davis Scholarship Endowment Fund honors the couple’s many years of service to others. The scholarship was established to encourage students from locales that are medically underserved to pursue a career as a physician assistant.

The John R. and Barbara F. Murray Award was established by Dr. Paul and Jane Davis to recognize an outstanding graduate of the physician assistant program.

Established through her bequest, the Ida Fern Wayne ’29 and Albert Castile Religious Studies Endowment Fund is to assist a religious studies major with an emphasis in pastoral or Biblical studies preparing for Christian ministry. Mrs. Castile was a Churches of God missionary to India and resided there during World War II.

Created by family and friends, the Marvin "Monty" Monroe ’42 Scholarship Endowment Fund is awarded to a student majoring in political science or preparing for public service in government or politics. The student must maintain a 3.0 grade point average. Monroe served as a member of the Board of Trustees for UF from 1962-80 and as an emeritus member of the board from 1987-99. He graduated from then Findlay College in 1942.

The Dr. Jean C. Nye Spanish Scholarship Endowment Fund was established through a bequest by the Rev. James H. Nye in memory of his wife. During her tenure, Nye taught Spanish, developed the undergraduate program in bilingual multicultural education and created the master of arts in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and bilingual education program. The scholarship is awarded to a Spanish major who has a 3.0 grade point average.

Established in his memory by friends and family, the Samuel F. Reist Scholarship Endowment Fund is awarded to a student preparing for a career in the human services profession. The student must have a 3.0 grade point average. Reist was a 1982 graduate of then Findlay College.

The Marjorie L. White Piano Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Eugene M. White to honor his wife for her service in the teaching of music. The scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in music with a piano emphasis or to a piano student at UF. The recipient must have a 3.25 grade point average.

Established by Nancy P. Borsani ’88, the Nancy Borsani Operating Book Scholarship assists single mothers pursuing an education and is used to purchase academic books needed for course work.

Mr. and Mrs. O.J. Huffman established the O.J. and Georgia Huffman Scholarship to assist any high school graduate of Hancock County not participating in athletics at UF. The recipient must have a 3.0 grade point average.

Through a bequest, Carolyn Marvin established the Howard and Carolyn Marvin Scholarship. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 grade point average.

Through the generosity of Wilbur Clauss, the Clauss Varsity Ice Hockey Scholarship Endowment Fund has been established. This scholarship is awarded to a female and male student each year who is participating on the respective varsity ice hockey team.
