Findlay, Ohio, May 1, 2002 — April Lee, who will graduate on May 4 with a bachelor’s degree in social work and Spanish from The University of Findlay, has been named National Student Employee of the Year for 2002 by the National Student Employment Association.
Lee was first honored as UF’s Student Employee of the Year and then was named State Student Employee of the Year for Ohio and the Midwest Regional Student Employee of the Year by the Midwest Association of Student Employment Administrators. The Midwest region consists of 14 states. From there, Lee won the national award, being selected from thousands of students across the country.
A native of Bucyrus, Lee worked primarily for Tony Wilgus, associate professor of social work. Wilgus nominated Lee for the on-campus recognition.
A graduate of Bettsville High School, Lee has been highly involved in volunteer work in the community. She has worked for her church as well as hospitals, the Community Action Commission, Rural Opportunities Inc. Migrant Project, United Way Days of Caring, Fort Findlay Playground, American Cancer Society, Red Cross, Head Start Day Care and City Mission.
Active on campus, Lee was an executive officer for Campus Program Board, a member of Campus Compact, Students for Political Awareness, Spanish Club, Circle K, Young Democrats and Aristos Eklektos honorary fraternity. She also served as president of the Social Work Club and was public relations chairperson for the International Club.
Lee has consistently earned Deans’ List honors at UF, as well as being named 2000-2001 Spanish Student of the Year and 1999-2000 Outstanding Sophomore Student of the Year. She is also a member of the Phi Alpha Honorary Society for social work.
After attending graduate school, Lee hopes to work as a bilingual social worker.
In addition to cash awards and plaques for the campus, state and regional awards, Lee was awarded a $1,000 check for winning the national honor during the annual UF Honors and Awards Assembly on April 25. The presentation was made by Victor Monette, the president of the National Student Employment Association.
