UF Information Assurance Concentration Receives Recognition
Thursday, July 11, 2002

Findlay, Ohio, July 11, 2002 — The information assurance concentration within the technology management program at The University of Findlay has received recognition from the National Security Agency’s National INFOSEC Education & Training Program.

The University is being awarded a certificate indicating that it conforms to the NSA’s national standard for information security professional education. An official presentation will be made at the Committee on National Security Systems annual conference in the spring of 2003.

One of Findlay’s newest majors, the technology management program is designed to prepare technologically capable leaders for the careers of the 21st century. The program’s broad curriculum includes course work in applied technology, computer science, mathematics, ethics, written and oral communication, as well as liberal arts electives.

Each technology management major chooses an area of concentration, such as accounting, business applications consulting, business management, computer science, criminal justice, economics, information systems analysis, music, marketing or even an individualized concentration. The business applications consulting and information systems analysis concentrations were developed in a partnership with Solomon Software, which has since been acquired by Microsoft Great Plains Business Solutions. These concentrations specifically prepare students to work with the financial software aspects of the business world.

Specifically, the information assurance concentration is designed to prepare students to work on the security side of information technology. Students are trained to work with secure networks, secure e-commerce, computer forensics and issues regarding Web sites and the digital economy.

Loren Wagner, manager of network services at Cooper Tire & Rubber Company and senior adjunct lecturer of technology management, is serving as the visiting executive director of the Center for Information Assurance Education at UF.

“We have offered a security fundamentals course since the fall of 1999. By expanding our program, we are supporting a nationally recognized need for education in information security,” said Wagner.

Courses for the program are being offered beginning in fall 2002. For more information on the program, contact Helen Schneider at 419-434-4653.
