Findlay, Ohio, Aug. 20, 2002 — The University of Findlay announced today the establishment of the Marilyn & Gordon Macklin Intergenerational Institute, formerly known as the Marilyn & Gordon Macklin Institute for Intergenerational Studies.
Due to the extraordinary growth of the intergenerational area, the University and the Marilyn & Gordon Macklin Intergenerational Institute recognized the need for a change. Effective July 1, 2003, the Marilyn & Gordon Macklin Intergenerational Institute will become its own not-for-profit organization housed at Birchaven Retirement Village in Findlay, formerly Winebrenner Village. The 2002-2003 fiscal year will serve as a transition period.
The Marilyn & Gordon Macklin Intergenerational Institute will maintain affiliation with The University of Findlay, working cooperatively with the intergenerational studies academic program. The University will retain the academic program.
The Marilyn & Gordon Macklin Intergenerational Institute provides a model intergenerational care program at its Lifelong Education Center, a childcare program that provides daily intergenerational interactions, where intergenerational studies students may complete field experiences, internships and service learning. In addition, the Marilyn & Gordon Macklin Intergenerational Institute will continue to pursue intergenerational
research, prepare articles for journal publications and develop additional intergenerational initiatives.
During the transition year, a board of directors will be established to act as the governing body of the Marilyn & Gordon Macklin Intergenerational Institute, while the existing advisory board will continue to provide guidance and advice for advancing the Institute.
This restructuring affords both the University and the Marilyn & Gordon Macklin Intergenerational Institute the opportunity to enhance further intergenerational growth, initiatives, consultation and training. The academic program and the intergenerational initiatives at the Marilyn & Gordon Macklin Intergenerational Institute will not only enhance the lives of individuals in this community but will set the standard for national replication.
