Second Academic Excellence Day Set at UF

Findlay, Ohio, Oct. 29, 2002 — Actor B.D. Wong will be the featured speaker for The University of Findlay’s Academic Excellence Day Nov. 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Malcolm Athletic Center, Koehler Fitness and Recreation Complex.

An actor on television, in movies and on the stage, Wong is perhaps best known for his role as Father Ray Mukada, the compassionate and tireless Catholic priest in the HBO series Oz. He also plays the recurring character Dr. Huang, a forensic psychiatrist, on NBC’s Law and Order: Special Victim’s Unit.

Wong made his Broadway debut in M. Butterfly, which earned him a Tony Award. His film credentials include playing opposite Martin Short in Father of the Bride, opposite Brad Pitt in Seven Years in Tibet and as the voice of Captain Li Shang in Disney’s Mulan.

Wong’s presentation, titled “All the World’s a Stage: Supporting the Transformation from Exclusion to Inclusion” will be held from 9 to 10:15 a.m.

The theatre program will follow Wong’s presentation with excerpts from The Diary of Anne Frank from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Two forum discussions will be held. The first is “Service Learning Across the Disciplines” from noon to 1 p.m. The second, “Terrorism” Tolerance and Security – Drawing the Line,” will be held from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m.

The goal of Academic Excellence Day is to showcase the academic excellence of students and faculty across campus. A total of 31 different presentations will be given in four sessions throughout the day. Session one runs from 11 to 11:30 a.m., session two runs from 11:30 a.m. to noon, session three is from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m., and session four is from 1:45 to 2:15 p.m. Booths will be set up in the Malcolm Athletic Center, and students and faculty will move from booth to booth as the presentations are given. Classes until 4 p.m. on that day are canceled in order to give all students and faculty members the opportunity to attend.

The event is sponsored by the Honors Program at UF.
