UF To Host Ohio Academy of Science Annual Meeting

Findlay, Ohio, March 26, 2003 — The University of Findlay will host the 112th annual meeting of the Ohio Academy of Science on April 4-6. The theme for this year’s meeting is “Bioterrorism and Emerging Health Threats.”

On Friday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m., Dr. Paul Rega will give a special address on bioterrorism in the Alumni Memorial Union. Rega is a practicing emergency physician at The Toledo Hospital who has extensive experience in disaster management and disaster medicine. He is the founder of the OH-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team.

Dr. Steven Mark Gordon, a staff physician and epidemiologist for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation’s Department of Infectious Disease, will speak on “Updates on Bioterrorism: 2003” on Saturday, April. 5, at 11:15 a.m. in the Alumni Memorial Union. Gordon did a fellowship in the Centers for Disease Control Division of Infectious Disease and did a residency with the U.S. Public Health Service.

On Saturday, April 5, at 2 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Union, a panel discussion will be held on “Ohio’s Homeland Security: Bioterrorism and Emerging Health Threats.” Randy Van Dyne, assistant vice president and executive director of the School of Environmental and Emergency Management at UF, will moderate the discussion. Panelists include Dr. Steve Wagner, chief of the Bureau of Environmental Health for the Ohio Department of Health; Dr. Michael Bisesi with the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the Medical College of Ohio; Dr. Todd Stewart, director of the Program for International and Homeland Security at The Ohio State University; Dr. David Robinson, vice president of aerosol engineering and biodefense sciences at Battelle Memorial Institute; and Judy Cantwell, executive director of the Hancock County American Red Cross and a member of the National Red Cross Disaster Team.
