Findlay, Ohio, Feb. 12, 2004 — The Stars of The Platters, The Drifters and The Coasters will perform Friday, Feb. 27, at 8 p.m. in the TLB Auditorium, Winebrenner Theological Seminary, as part of The University of Findlay’s Concert and Lecture Series.
Myles Savage of The Platters, Barry Gunn of The Coasters and George Caines and Wolf Johnson of The Drifters will perform many familiar songs during the show. The program will include such hits as Only You, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, The Great Pretender, Shake, Rattle and Roll, Unchained Melody, Love Potion Number Nine, Love Train, Up on the Roof, Twist, Stand By Me, Save the Last Dance and Under the Boardwalk.
Savage is often asked what inspires the passion in his music.
“Everyone in life has a calling. Mine is to bring joy into the world and uplift humanity with a blessed voice. When I look into the audience night after night and see the wide smiles and eyes aglow, I know I’m fulfilling a mission of endearment. I sing to live and live to sing. My heart beats to the very rhythm of a musical score. When a person sleeps and breaths passion, he or she is passion,” he said.
Gunn spoke about the way the group’s music crosses all generations.
“Today’s teens favor the old favorites like Charlie Brown and Yackety Yak, while the older audience prefers the love songs that remind them of their ‘57 Chevys and Mom and Pop soda pop shops. They can close their eyes and let the music take them back to when they were younger and relive the good ‘ol days. They keep the Coasters songs alive, and the music keeps me alive,” Gunn said.
Tickets for the event are $25 for the public, $15 for UF faculty and staff and $10 for UF and high school students. They are available by calling 419-434-5335 or emailing funkk@findlay.edu.
