Procter & Gamble Awards Grant to Mazza Museum
Thursday, June 17, 2004

Findlay, Ohio, June 17, 2004 – The University of Findlay’s Mazza Museum has received a $12,000 grant from Procter & Gamble Co. that will allow the museum to offer free field trips to schools that would otherwise be unable to afford the trips.

The museum features original art from children’s books, and a typical museum field trip includes visiting the gallery exhibits and participating in educational activities.

While the Mazza Museum charges only $3 per student ($2 for the guided tour and $1 for the activity), field trips become very costly for schools due to the expense of busing.

A bus trip to the museum typically costs $400-$450.

“The generosity of Procter & Gamble in providing this grant cannot be overstated considering the financial difficulties Ohio schools are now encountering,” Mazza Museum Director Jerry J. Mallett, Ed.D., said.

Because P&G’s Lima, Ohio, manufacturing plant was instrumental in awarding the grant, the museum will give preference to Allen County schools.

Private, parochial and home schools are also welcome to apply for the free tours.

The museum will begin to invite the schools when the academic year begins in the autumn. Mallett said that he didn’t know how many tours the museum could provide with the grant money, but interested schools’ applications will be handled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Mazza Museum of International Art from Children’s Picture Books is the first and largest teaching gallery of its kind in the world. The museum was founded in 1982 with four pieces and was named for the first benefactors, Dr. August Mazza and his late wife, Aleda, alumni of the University. Today, the Mazza Museum contains more than 2,300 pieces of original artwork and conducts extensive educational programs to promote literacy and a lifelong appreciation of literature and the arts. More than 5,000 individuals visit the Museum each year.
