Japanese Students Visit UF
Friday, September 10, 2004

Findlay, Ohio, Sept. 10, 2004 – The University of Findlay is fortunate to host 12 individuals from the Kake and Takahashi Educational Institutions in Japan from Aug. 23 to Sept. 14.

The visit is part of the UF/Kake Bridge Program, an exchange program between The University of Findlay and the two Japanese educational institutions, designed to give participants cultural and educational experiences. Earlier this summer, five staff and faculty members and five students from UF traveled to Japan for a three-week visit.

During their visit here, the 11 students and one faculty member from Japan are studying in the University’s Intensive English Language Program and staying in the homes of Findlay families. They are participating in traditional UF student events, including the Arch Ceremony, and will enjoy visits to the Rutherford B. Hayes Museum in Fremont and Cedar Point.

The Kake Educational Institution was founded in 1961 by Tsutomu Kake and currently manages more than 20 educational organizations ranging from nursery schools to universities with graduate programs. Kake has a close relationship with its sister organization, Takahashi Educational Institution, which also manages several educational organizations including two universities.

Tsutomu Kake recently retired as general president of both institutions, leaving Kake to his son, Kotaro, and Takahashi to his daughter, Miyako. Both Tsutomu and Kotaro have received honorary doctorates from The University of Findlay, and Kotaro is a member of the UF Board of Trustees.

The program is organized locally by Fumiko Harada, professor of Japanese and special assistant to the president, and Hiroaki Kawamura, assistant professor of Japanese.

The University of Findlay is a comprehensive university located in Findlay, Ohio, about 45 miles south of Toledo. With a total enrollment of 4,500 full-time and part-time students, The University of Findlay is noted for its innovative, career-oriented programs in more than 60 majors and eight master’s degrees.
