Congressman Oxley to Speak at UF
Monday, October 11, 2004

Findlay, Ohio, Oct. 11, 2004 -- Congressman Mike Oxley, R-Findlay, will be presenting an overview and update on the Sarbanes-Oxley Act from 9-10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at The University of Findlay.

The discussion will take place in the Winebrenner Theological Seminary TLB Foundation Convocation Center. Oxley’s presentation is free, and the public is encouraged to attend.

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act is one of the most significant pieces of legislation affecting U.S. business today. It has introduced a new era of corporate accounting and reporting practices, and it established a new federal oversight board for the accounting profession.

This federal law, co-authored by Sen. Paul Sarbanes, D-Md., was passed in the summer of 2002 to help restore the public’s confidence in the ethics of American business in the wake of securities scandals at publicly traded corporations such as Enron, WorldCom/MCI, and Global Crossing. The act also substantially altered expectations for legal ethics as well as business practices within a publicly traded business.

A Findlay native, Oxley has represented Ohio’s fourth district since 1981. He is the chairman of the House Committee on Financial Services. The committee, which is the second largest in the House with 70 members, oversees Wall Street, banking, insurance, monetary policy and housing issues.

The University of Findlay is a comprehensive university located in Findlay, Ohio, about 45 miles south of Toledo.
