Mercedes Ruehl to Visit UF

Findlay, Ohio, Oct. 22, 2004 — Oscar and Tony award-winning actor Mercedes Ruehl will visit The University of Findlay Nov. 3 and 4 as the second recipient of the Don and Barb Hennigs Chair for Theatre Guest Artists.

The public is invited to attend a public interview and question and answer session with Ruehl on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 8 p.m. in the John and Hester Powell Grimm Theatre, Egner Center for the Performing Arts. Admission is free, but tickets must be reserved in advance by calling the Box Office at 419-434-5335.

During her visit to UF, Ruehl will speak to classes, attend a luncheon with UF theatre students and faculty and be the guest of honor at a reception for students, faculty and staff.

Ruehl’s Broadway credits include: 2002’s “The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?,” for which she was nominated for a Tony as best actress in a play; “Lost in Yonkers,” for which she won a Tony as best actress in a play in 1991; “The Rose Tattoo;” “I’m Not Rappaport;” and “The Shadow Box,” for which she received a Tony nomination as best featured actress in a play. Other regional theater credits include “Medea,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” “Antony and Cleopatra” and “Other People’s Money.”

Her film career is highlighted by her 1992 Oscar win as best supporting actress for “The Fisher King.” She also received a Golden Globe for that role. Other film roles include “Married to the Mob,” “Last Action Hero,” “Big” and “The Secret of My Success.”

Ruehl also appeared in several episodes of “Frasier,” as Frasier’s abrasive station manager Kate Costas.

The Don and Barb Hennigs Chair for Theatre Guest Artists was established in 2003 to bring to campus national or international actors to share their expertise with UF theatre students. The chair allows for one guest artist per year.
