UF Education Majors Achieve 100 Percent Praxis III Passage Rate
Friday, December 10, 2004

Findlay, Ohio, Dec. 10, 2004 – Recent graduates from The University of Findlay College of Education have achieved a 100 percent passage rate on the Praxis III: Classroom Performance Assessment test. This is the third year for the pass rate on Praxis III to be 100 percent for The University of Findlay.

The test was developed by the Education Testing Service, the world’s largest private educational measurement organization, for use in teacher licensing decisions made by state or local agencies. The test, given during a teacher’s first year of teaching, measures beginning teachers’ knowledge and skills in the following areas referred to as domains: organizing content knowledge for student learning, creating an environment for student learning, teaching for student learning, and teacher professionalism.

Dr. Melissa Cain, dean of the College of Education, credits the perfect passage score to the college’s student portfolio assessment system. “The portfolio assessment system that we have in place helps our students be well-prepared to pass this performance-based test the first time around,” Cain explained. “Thanks to the dedication of our excellent faculty, the candidates have learned to address all 19 criteria related to the four domains; so that, by the time they go through their actual Praxis III assessment, they are totally comfortable with the process.”

In addition to the 100 percent passage rate, students from The University of Findlay College of Education achieved two of the three highest scores in region three out of 105 students who took the test.

The University of Findlay’s College of Education enables students to explore the teaching profession through a combination of general education classes, professional education courses and field experiences. Students get first-hand experience as early as their freshman year through observing, learning and teaching in the classroom. The college also emphasizes technology use in the classroom and in personal management. UF offers education degrees at both the bachelor’s and master’s level.
