UF Student to Speak About Having a Positive Attitude Through Adversity at O.I.L.E.R. Leadership Luncheon
Thursday, February 10, 2005

Feb. 10, 2005, Findlay, Ohio – An area student leader will be the featured speaker at The University of Findlay’s monthly O.I.L.E.R. Leadership Luncheon on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at 11:30 a.m. in the Alumni Memorial Union Endly Room.

Angelic Muhammad, a senior psychology major at UF, will give a talk titled “Dream the Dream… Diversity in Leadership” as part of the University’s celebration of Black History Month.

According to Muhammad, a native of Detroit, Mich., she will discuss how her experiences as a young, black, single mother has taught her to turn negative circumstances into positive ones. “By being an African American single mother, and living in a conservative town I feel some issues are frowned upon that are simply a part of life. As a single mother, having had worked two jobs and currently going to school full-time, I have learned a lot that I can pass on to young adults. I hope that through my talk I can help others turn the negative things in their life into positive things,” Muhammad explained.

Muhammad has taken her own advice to heart. After graduation in the spring, she plans to continue her work with Pennies for Single Parents Striving for Higher Education, a non-profit organization that she is in the process of establishing. According to Muhammad the idea for the new organizations came from her challenges. She is currently writing a grant for a facility in a grant writing class she’s taking at UF.

After graduation, she also plans to continue her work as an inspirational speaker. Muhammad is very active on campus, have participated in theater, and currently the Black Student Union, Psy-Key Club and mentoring programs. She is also active in the community through her work with area youth.

The O.I.L.E.R. Leadership Luncheon Series is sponsored by the University’s Student Activities and Commuter Student Services Office.
