Findlay, Ohio, March 18, 2005 — The Arden H. and Dorothy L. Burgoon Scholarship Endowment Fund has been established at The University of Findlay through a $266,000 bequest from Mrs. Burgoon, who passed away in November 2003 at the age of 98.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to students enrolled in at least 12 semester hours at UF. Recipients must have a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need as defined by the University Office of Financial Aid. Mrs. Burgoon’s bequest will provide more than $13,000 annually in scholarship awards to UF students.
Mrs. Burgoon was born in Sidney, Ohio, in 1905. She was married to James J. Sarver from 1927 until his death in 1966. She married Mr. Burgoon in 1971, and he died in 1992.
Although Mrs. Burgoon never attended college, she had been a teacher for deaf children. She also was a homemaker and the former owner of the L and W Sandwich Shop.
Mr. Burgoon retired as an accountant for Marathon Oil Co. He was also a realtor, and he worked in farm management.
“She was a delightful lady,” David Kuenzli, Mrs. Burgoon’s attorney, said. “She had a wonderful outlook on life.”
According to Mr. Kuenzli, Mrs. Burgoon decided to leave a bequest to the University because she wanted to give other people the opportunity to go to college that she didn’t have. She took comfort in the idea that she could help young people go to college, he said.
