LAFF Camp Will Teach Fitness, Nutrition
Wednesday, April 13, 2005

Findlay, Ohio, April 13, 2005 – Children who could benefit from attaining a healthier weight are invited to attend the Lively Activities for Fun and Fitness (LAFF) Camp at The University of Findlay June 20-24.

The camp, which will run from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day, is an effort to expose children to a variety of fun, healthy activities that correspond to their individual interests in an environment that fosters confidence, promotes healthy choices and advances a healthy lifestyle.

“The camp is designed around a low-risk environment that allows children to explore and develop their interests and skills,” Camp Director Laura Schmelzer said. “Change is difficult, and self-esteem is a key component in handling or implementing change. With that in mind, the camp provides an opportunity for children to participate without risk to their self-esteem.”

According to Schmelzer, the participants will not only take part in physical activities such as a nature hike and a scavenger hunt, but they will also receive information about the benefits of engaging in those activities. In informal educational sessions that are intermingled with the activities, the campers will be presented with information and guidance that will aid them in making wise food and activity choices after they leave the camp. This combination presents the campers with a holistic approach to improving their health.

“The goal,” Schmelzer said, “is to promote participation in activities that the children find meaningful and help children develop behaviors that are beneficial—not only in losing weight, but also in developing a overall wellness that benefits the mind, body and spirit.”

Area fourth, fifth and sixth graders may participate in the camp.

The L.A.F.F. camp will only be accepting 25 children. Registration for the camp is $65, which includes the cost of a daily lunch. The registration deadline is May 15th.

For more information or to register for L.A.F.F. Camp, email Laura Schmelzer at schmelzer@findlay.edu or call 419-434-6510.

LAFF Camp is sponsored by The University of Findlay Occupational Therapy Program, the Findlay Family YMCA and the Findlay Rotary Club.
