Teens Prepare For CSI Careers at UF Camp
Thursday, June 16, 2005

Findlay, Ohio – A group of high school students will learn first-hand what it is like to be a crime scene investigator during The University of Findlay’s forensic science camp, June 26-29.

According to Phil Lucas, UF instructor of criminal justice, the participants will learn about forensic science through a series of lectures. Then they will collect and analyze the data from a mock scene. “The participants will be collecting evidence involving ballistics, fingerprints, entomology and biological evidence at a mock crime scene. They will analyze the evidence in a laboratory environment and present their findings to a moot court at the end of camp,” Lucas explained. “We really want them to experience all sides of a forensic science career.”

Approximately 40 students from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Colorado and Utah will be attending the camp.

The camp is part of The University of Findlay’s new forensic science program. Approximately 20 students will start in the fall as the University’s first class of forensic science majors. Students in the program will take a variety of criminal justice and science courses including entomology, chemistry and forensics science. Students can also specialize in a particular area like DNA/serology or chemistry/toxicology.
