UF Camp Working to Prevent Childhood Obesity
Wednesday, June 22, 2005
June 22, 2005, Findlay, Ohio – Childhood obesity is becoming a significant problem for many young people, and a new program at The University of Findlay is working to help teach children how to eat healthy and stay active.
Eighteen children from the Findlay area are participating in the University’s first L.A.F.F. Camp, (Lively Activities for Fun and Fitness). The camp runs from June 20-24, and the campers range in age from nine to twelve-years-old. The camp is a unique summer day camp that is designed to teach the youngsters how to make healthy choices that correspond with their interests in an environment that fosters confidence, promotes healthy choices and advances a healthy lifestyle.
According to Laura Schmelzer, camp director and UF assistant professor of occupational therapy, she hopes the camp will jump-start the children toward leading a healthier lifestyle. “With hectic schedules and so many fast food options is it very important that children learn early on how to make healthy choices,” Schmelzer explained. “Change is difficult, and self-esteem is a key component for many of these kids. With that in mind, the camp provides an opportunity for children to participate without risk to their self-esteem.”
The camp is sponsored by UF’s Occupational Therapy Program, the Findlay Family YMCA, and the Findlay Rotary Club.
